Invincible Won't Have Crossovers From Other Image Comics Characters

Robert Kirkman, the creator of the new Amazon Prime Video series Invincible, says that the show will not have any characters from other Image Comics series crossing over onto the show. Invincible is a new raunchy, American animated superhero drama that just premiered this March. The show is based on the Invincible comic book series that debuted in 2003. Kirkman created both the comic books and developed the new show.

The story follows a teenager named Mark Grayson a.k.a. Invincible. His father is Nolan Grayson a.k.a. Omni-Man, and is the most powerful superhero on Earth. Mark starts to follow in his father's footsteps once he begins to develop his own powers after his 17th birthday. Invincible essentially features an origin story for its title character but the show has been praised by critics for its ability to subvert the common superhero origin story tropes. The series has been met with overwhelmingly positive reviews and debuted with a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. Invincible's massive cast includes the likes of Steven Yeun (Invincible), Mark Hamill (Rosebaum), Seth Rogen (Allen the Alien), Sandra Oh (Debbie Grayson), and J. K. Simmons (Omni-Man).

Image Comics is one of today's major comic book publishers, with hundreds of different series all featuring unique superheroes and supervillains. With Marvel Studios popularizing cinematic universes, it raises the question of whether other characters across the various Image Comics series would show up in Invincible. In a recent interview with Collider, Kirkman answered this very question. When asked if other Image Comics characters like Savage Dragon would ever show up in the series, he said the following:

"Right now there is not. I think that is kind of the magic of comics and [with] comics I can call up Erik Larsen and be like are you cool if Savage Dragon shows up and he's like yeah great. When you start involving massive corporations like Amazon, things get to be a little bit tedious and difficult and it's not the same kind of easy process. So it makes it a little bit harder for us to do something like that, unfortunately."

Invincible makes an appearance in several other Image Comics series like Savage Dragon, so it would not be unprecedented for there to be a crossover with other characters in the Invincible show. Unfortunately, it seems like managing the character rights of something like that might be hard to do at a massive company like Amazon. However, Kirkman did previously mention how he imagines there could be up to 7 seasons of Invincible. Therefore, there is a lot of time between now and then for possibly Kirkman or Amazon to change their minds.

If other Image Comics characters did ever crossover onto Invincible, then there could be an entirely new superhero cinematic universe on Amazon Prime Video. The potential is endless for spin-off shows with the number of Image Comics characters out there. However, for now, there are no such plans. Keep watching for updates on Invincible because that could all change, especially if the series becomes a huge hit.
