Lord of the Rings: 10 Best Gandalf Memes | ScreenRant

Gandalf is one of the primary characters of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings film franchise and one of the most well-known fantasy characters of all time. As a wizard, he's one of the most powerful beings in Middle-Earth, as well as one of the wisest; and his status as one of the nine members of the Fellowship of the Ring made him that much more important to the saga.

The character, played by the legendary Sir Ian McKellen, has had a ton of meme-worthy moments throughout his various appearances in the films. Here are 10 great memes featuring his character that are sure to make you laugh.

10 Be Silent

The joke of this meme is genuinely pretty interesting; Gandalf's statement to Wormtongue here is an example of what's known as a lipogram: a piece of text that completely omits a popular letter (such as E or A).

These can be incredibly difficult to write as the amount of words you're able use is severely diminished, but the most creative of writers have found a way: in 1939, author Ernest Vincent Wright published the book "Gadsby", billed as a "50,000 word novel without the letter E."

9 Blame Pippin

Pippin sure wasn't doing Gandalf any favors by making a huge noise, but, to be fair, the wizard was already shining a bright light from his staff that would've woken anyone up.

When you think about it, Gandalf basically got off scot-free; after the Orcs attacked, all he had to do was blame it on the "fool of a took!"

8 You Shall Not Pass

One of the most popular Gandalf memes involves a statement he makes to an attacking Balrog in The Fellowship of the Ring. The creature hailed from Morgoth, and it was one of the only things Gandalf was ever truly afraid of - but, when the wizard finally confronts his foe, he certainly doesn't show his fear, allowing the Fellowship to get as far away as possible before he takes on the Balrog himself, telling it "You shall not pass!".

This meme juxtaposes that famous line alongside a humorous choice of license plate.

7 Types Of Headaches

Gandalf gets seriously angry at Pippin sometimes, but maybe it's just because the blundering Hobbit's never-ending antics give him a serious headache.

From knocking a skeleton into the well in Moria, to revealing himself to Sauron with the Palantir, to even telling Denethor how Boromir died, specifically against Gandalf's instructions - Pippin is just too much for even a wizard to handle.

6 I Will Draw You, Saruman

This wholesome take on the scene where Gandalf removes Saruman's spirit from Theoden's body paints Gandalf's line about "drawing Saruman" differently.

In this version, the two wizards are still friends, with Gandalf showing off a sketch he made of Saruman.

5 I Will Not Speak It Here

This was always something that confused people in The Fellowship of the Ring - why does Gandalf decide not to speak the language of Mordor while in Hobbiton with Frodo, but then does it in Rivendell for apparently no reason?

As Elrond was clearly chagrined by Gandalf's unnecessary utterance, this meme's supposition that Gandalf was just doing it for the reaction could be entirely right.

4 Never Late

When Gandalf is late to meet up with Frodo the first time in The Fellowship of the Ring, he tells the Hobbit that he "arrives precisely when he means to," but the next time he's delayed, it's clear that he didn't "mean to" be imprisoned atop the castle Orthanc.

Needless to say, Gandalf could definitely use with a little bit of an adjustment in terms of phrasing, since "never" is an absolute that he probably doesn't want to use in the future - at least if he intends to keep his word.

3 Pippin Panic

Gandalf isn't exactly the most comforting of Wizards; when Pippin is depressed about his seemingly inescapable fate, instead of trying to inspire Pippin to trust the power of good over evil, the wizard delivers a bit of a downer.

Pippin would have to face the hard truth at some point, but Gandalf's forceful - if well-intended - way of preparing the Hobbit for the "journey's end" definitely could have been at least a little more subtle.

2 "Sadly, Yes - But I Lived!"

Gandalf was clearly killed in his fight against the Balrog, but he was "sent back" (a resurrection of sorts) by Eru, the godlike ruler of Middle-Earth, to help the rest of the Fellowship complete their quest to destroy the Ring.

Gandalf's experience of "dying but living" definitely goes well with the meme template, which is taken from the hit 2009 film Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs.

1 Wisest Of The Istari

The wisest wizard alive was, at least at one point, obviously Saruman; his name is even subtitled "The Wise." And yet, when Gandalf came to seek his advice on how to handle the quickly rising power that was Sauron, Saruman had turned from reason to madness, telling Gandalf that the only way to escape was to join the Dark Lord.

Because he refused to listen to Saruman's insistence that there was no way to lessen Sauron's deadly hold on Middle-Earth, Gandalf was sent to roof of Saruman's tower, Orthanc, and left there - basically, to die.
