Money Heist's star-crossed lovers Stockholm and Denver found their relationship on the rocks in season 4, but will they actually break up in season 5? The pair met when Stockholm was still going by her given name, Mónica Gaztambide, and was one of the gang's hostages at the Royal Mint. She got her tongue-in-cheek nickname from the phenomenon of Stockholm Syndrome, after she fell in love with Denver during the heist.
Stockholm and Denver's relationship has never exactly been normal. Their first meaningful interaction was when Denver pleaded with Mónica not to abort Arturo Román's baby. Things quickly escalated when Denver was ordered to kill Mónica, but instead shot her in the thigh to give the impression that she'd been killed. Romance flourished while Mónica was hidden away in a bank vault inside the Royal Mint, and when the gang finally made their daring escape, Stockholm left with them.
Two and a half years after the end of Money Heist season 2, Stockholm and Denver are raising a son, Cincinnatti. However, Cincinnatti's biological father is Arturo, and the slimy character made an unwelcome return in Money Heist season 3. He was first brought in as an expert witness to offer advice on negotiating with the gang, and later flinging himself into the Bank of Spain in a desperate attempt at earning more glory and reuniting with Stockholm. Since his return he's done nothing but make trouble, including trying to break Stockholm and Denver up.
First, Arturo came on to Stockholm and sexually assaulted her in a bathroom. He later recounted a few details of this to Denver in order to trigger his temper, and Stockholm watched in horror as her boyfriend brutally beat Arturo - a violation of the Professor's rule against hurting hostages. Afterwards, Stockholm said that she didn't want Cincinnatti to be raised by a father with so much rage inside him, and the two spent many episodes at a painful distance, with Denver increasingly growing suspicious that Stockholm was developing feelings for Rio.
While the signs weren't good, Stockholm, Rio and Denver did seem to reconcile after a confrontation in an elevator ended with the three of them hugging. However, Stockholm actress Esther Acebo has hinted that there may be sad things in store for the Money Heist couple. During a Chelsea Film Festival Talks TV Series event in May, the actress said (via The Express), "I’m happy that I don’t have to come up with my own story because if I had to, I would not have come up with what the writers have given me." With regards to Stockholm's future with Denver and their son, Acebo could only say, "She’s going to stick to the more traditional route and choose to come out alive and find Cincinnati."
Cincinatti was left behind in Thailand when the pair of robbers went back for another heist, and is currently at risk of being orphaned. Arturo asked if he could see his biological son, and Stockholm reluctantly agreed, driving another wedge between herself and Denver. The strain of the criminal life has already led to another of Money Heist's original couples, Tokyo and Rio, breaking up. Will Denver and Stockfilm be next?
At the moment their relationship is definitely a mess, but the one pinpoint of hope that fans can cling to is that it's unlikely Money Heist's writers will let Arturo be anything other than miserable in the end. And if Stockholm and Denver do make it out of the Bank of Spain alive, their relationship could emerge stronger than ever.
