Barney Stinson is the epitome of toxic masculinity. One of the most beloved characters in the CBS smash hit How I Met Your Mother, the character, played wonderfully by Neil Patrick Harris, loves suits, women, whiskey, and laser tag. But what is underneath Barney's need for financial and sexual success? A scarred man too afraid to bear and share his feelings.
Whenever Barney allows himself to be honest with his heart, fans get to see a sweet side of the womanizing bro, as seen in his origin story, when the love of his life rejects him, and later on with his unconditional love for Robin.
10 "The Two Of You Have Something Most People Search Their Entire Lives And Never Find."
When it comes to love, Barney is the first to say he's immune to it. But, even though it takes him a while to admit it for himself, he recognizes a great relationship when he sees it. This quote is from the 19th episode in season 2 when Barney saves Lily and Marshall's love. The two lovebirds have broken off their engagement, and Lily has moved to San Francisco. But Barney flies out to the West Coast and convinces his friend to go back to her fiancée.
His plan works, and Lily and Marshal make amends. Although he asks her to keep it a secret, Lily later reveals the story, and Barney is made Marshall's co-best man with Ted.
9 "It's Time To Let Go Of The Fantasies. It's Time To Grow Up."
In season 6, episode 2, "Cleaning House," Barney, the gang, and his brother James go help their mother, Loretta, pack her things to move. Amongst multiple pieces of evidence of Barney's lonely childhood and of the many lies Loretta told to make him better deal with it, there's one about Sam Gibbs, a man who could be his birth father.
Growing up without a father figure and as an insecure boy, Barney holds onto Loretta's fantasy that TV game show host Bob Barker is his real father. But standing at the door of Gibbs' house, Barney admits he needed to hold on to Barker as a way of better dealing with the abandonment and he now understands it's time to grow up, let go of fantasies, and face the truth. Gibbs turns out to be James' real father, but this is an important moment of growth to Barney.
8 "I Realized I've Been Searching For What I Really Want In Life. And You Know What? I Have Absolutely No Idea What That Is."
This quote is another landmark in Barney Stinson's character arch. In episode 9 of season 8, "Lobster Crawl," Barney comes to an important realization about his life, which he shares with Lily and Robin at McLaren's. After telling the story of how he did not sleep with Robin's co-worker, Brandi, the night before, he admits that since his break-up with Quinn, he has been broken and acting up. But he needs to stop repeating the same mistakes and figure it out.
This truth bomb from Barney makes Lily and Robin feel bad for their friend. However, Robin gets over it pretty fast when she shows up at Barney's apartment to seduce him later that night.
7 "I Want To Be Confused ... With You."
Barney says this adorable quote to Nora in the sixth season of the show, except it only happens inside his head. In the episode "A Change Of Heart," Barney gets his heart checked, accompanied by Lily, due to an arrhythmia. He retells the events of the previous 24 hours, which includes going on a date with Nora, freaking out about her wanting to settle down, lying about wanting the same thing, and, eventually, getting dumped for lying.
Barney eventually comes to realize he really does like Nora and wants to be with her. Unfortunately, he is too afraid to share his true feelings with her in front of her parents. But even though this line only takes place inside his head, it exists in his intention and it's super sentimental.
6 "When I Let A Day Go By Without Talking To You ... Then That Day Is Just No Good."
This adorable line is told to Robin in the episode "Disaster Averted," the ninth episode of season 7. In this episode, the gang recalls Hurricane Irene and the events that followed the big storm. At one point, Lily and Barney get calls from their parents who are worried about their well-being, which makes Robin jealous because she never got a call from her father.
Barney fake calls Robin to ease her sorrow, but he's forced to apologize when she finds out. Robin accepts his apologies and acts like the fact that her father never called is silly, but Barney makes sure to let her know that not talking to Robin is, actually, her father's loss. If this isn't proof that Barney is both a sentimental and a good friend, what is?
5 "For A Long Time, Deep Down, I Felt Sort Of Broken. But I Don't Feel That Way Anymore."
On the night before Robin and Barney's wedding, Barney gets drunk and becomes 100 percent honest about anything Robin and Ted ask him. So they take Barney for a ride, asking him about his work, Mrs. Mosby, and how he spends his money. But there's one particular question that Ted waits until he's alone with his friend to ask, and that's how he truly feels about getting married.
Barney honestly lays out his heart. He admits to being a bit nervous, but ultimately, he's never loved anyone more than he loves Robin. The quote is the ultimate proof of Barney's sentimentalism, and it's more than enough to make Ted smile at his friend's good fortune.
4 "Sometimes You Fall For Someone You Didn't Expect, But That Doesn't Make It Wrong. Doesn't Everyone Deserve To Be Happy?"
In "The Over-Correction," the 10th episode of the eighth season, the gang finds out that Marshall's mother and Lily's father are hooking up. The couple has a tough time dealing with the news about their parents, understandably, and that's when Barney delivers one of his best quotes about love during the entire show.
Lily actually absorbs the message and thinks about its meaning, while Robin decides to, again, question Barney's supposed feelings for Patrice. But, the truth is, that is good advice for everyone to listen to carefully.
3 "Whatever You Do In This Life, It's Not Legendary Unless Your Friends Are There To See It."
This quote is a sentimental ode to friendship. In the episode "Sunrise," the 17th episode of the ninth season, Barney takes on two young men as his disciples. He takes them to a strip club, changes their take on fashion, and finally gives them a stack of napkins, aka The Playbook.
But before he leaves without saying his name, Barney professes this pearl of wisdom that everyone should live by.
2 "I Am Hopelessly, Irretriavebly In Love With Her. More Than She Knows."
This line is supposedly fake, but fans all know it's true. It takes place in season 8, episode 6's "Splitsville." After Robin is unable to break up with her boyfriend, Nick, Barney decides to be a good friend and help her out. He marches down to the cafe where the two are and professes his love for Robin. Amongst the many adorable things he says is this beautiful love confession.
Their plan works out, and Nick gets the message. Barney makes sure to tell Robin it was all fake, but he knows, and she knows, and the audience knows that they know, that nothing is fake when it comes to these two.
1 "You Are The Love Of My Life. Everything I Have And Everything I Am Is Yours. Forever."
Father-less, Barney knows well the importance of paternal love. Maybe that why he's so aware of his feelings towards little Ellie Stinson, his daughter born in the series finale "Last Forever - Part Two."
In the scene in which Barney holds the baby girl, viewers get a glimpse of what might have been the rawest, purest moment in the whole show. As he cries, Barney acknowledges that Ellie is his truest love. If the episode was already emotionally charged for fans who watched the series come to an end, Barney's sentimental quote didn't help anyone hold back tears.
