The Lord of the Rings: The 10 Saddest Things About Frodo Baggins

Though the Lord of the Rings movies are filled with memorable and iconic characters, the individual at the center of it all is the young hobbit Frodo Baggins. In classic adventure story fashion, Frodo is plucked out of his ordinary life to go on an epic and dangerous quest to destroy the One Ring.

Indeed, the journey is dangerous and Frodo seems to be the character who is subjected to the most misery throughout the trilogy. Seeing all the pain and suffering he goes through is quite sad and easily makes him one of the most sympathetic characters in the whole story.

10 Leaving The Shire

Something that is made clear in all of the Middle-earth movies is that hobbits are most comfortable when they are left to their lazy and cozy lives in the Shire. That is certainly what Frodo would rather do, but he has the misfortune of being given the ring.

Having this cursed object thrust upon him is really not fair and it turns his whole world upside down. He is forced out of his peaceful life and it's not long before he begins to suspect he will never see the Shire again.

9 Losing A Finger

When Frodo encounters the character of Gollum, he sees a vision of what might become of him if the Ring continues to plague him. Gollum is a cursed creature whose only desire in the world is to have the Ring back and he's willing to kill to make that happen.

When Frodo and Gollum face off above the fires of Mount Doom, Frodo puts on the Ring to become invisible, but Gollum catches him and bits his finger off. Frodo getting maimed just as he is so close to the end is crushing.

8 Left By Bilbo

When Frodo is first introduced in the story, he is living his pleasant life in the Shire with his uncle Bilbo Baggins. Frodo and Bilbo are very close and Frodo seems to look out for his uncle quite a bit.

But when Bilbo decides it is time to abandon the Ring once and for all, he leaves their home without even saying goodbye to Frodo. Not only that, but he leaves the Ring behind, which ends up forcing Frodo on this horrible journey.

7 Leaving The Fellowship

Going all the way to Mount Doom without being killed seems like an impossible task for an innocent young hobbit to accomplish. Luckily, a band of brave heroes known as the Fellowship of the Ring volunteer to help Frodo in his journey.

While the Fellowship does prove to be a strong team, Frodo eventually realizes that the temptations of the Ring are too great and he is forced to go out on his own. It is a brave yet terrifying moment for Frodo, but luckily, Samwise Gamgee refuses to abandon him.

6 Turning Against Sam

The friendship between Sam and Frodo is one of the most impactful relationships in the trilogy. These two friends are put in one extraordinary circumstance after another, yet they stick together.

Unfortunately, the Ring continues to torment Frodo, making him paranoid and causing him to lash out at Sam. While Sam knows this is just the Ring poisoning Frodo, Gollum eventually convinces Frodo to turn against Sam and send him away in a heartbreaking moment.

5 Nearly Eaten By Spider

After telling Sam to leave, Frodo is led into a trap by Gollum. He lures him into a cave that is the home of the giant and deadly spider known as Shelob. After Gollum abandons Frodo, the poor hobbit has only a moment to realize his mistake of sending Sam away before Shelob attacks him.

After frantically running away from the spider and trying to fight it off, Frodo is stabbed by its stinger and wrapped up in its web. Thankfully, just before he is about to be eaten, Sam arrives to save the day.

4 Stabbed By The Witch-King

Throughout the trilogy, poor Frodo actually finds himself being stabbed a number of times. The first time comes when the hobbits and Aragorn come face to face with the Ringwraiths. These servants of Sauron are led by the Witch-king.

As Aragorn tries to fight them off, Frodo is cornered by Ringwraiths and stabbed with his cursed Morgul-knife. The blade begins killing Frodo slowly, turning him into a ring wraith before he is saved by the elves.

3 Becoming The Ringbearer

Unlike others who have come across the One Ring, Frodo did not seek it out for greed. It was given to him and in some ways forced upon him. Despite how unfair this is, he accepts the responsibility and volunteers to be the one to carry it.

For such a small person to take on such a large responsibility is heartbreaking, especially since Frodo clearly knows the dangers of the role he must play. He even confides in Gandalf that he wishes the Ring had never come to him.

2 Gandalf's Death

Another character who is very important to Frodo is Gandalf. He is an old friend of Frodo and Bilbo and acts as Frodo's advisor during the early days of their journey. Given everything that Frodo must face, the fact that he loses Gandalf so early is a devastating blow.

Gandalf makes a heroic stand against the demon Balrog to save the others but ends up falling to his apparent death. The look of despair and horror on Frodo's face speaks volumes about how big of a loss this was for the young hobbit.

1 Going Into The West

Much is made of the extended ending of Return of the King, but such an epic story deserves some time to wrap up. And it is hard not to get emotional during the final moments of Frodo saying goodbye to his friends.

After being scarred from his journey to Mordor, Frodo realizes he will never heal and accepts the invitation from the elves to travel to the Undying Lands. This means, after everything they have been through together, Frodo and Sam and forced to share a final goodbye.
