Survivor is a game of heroes and villains. In fact, this theme was played to its logical conclusion in the season Heroes vs. Villains, which saw the show's most popular heroes and villains (up to that time) competing against each other. Some players like to play the game fairly, generating alliances, making friends, winning competitions, and trying their best to remain friendly.
Others play the game a little differently. They backstab, betray, and manipulate - often with a knowing smile on their faces. Of course, villains don't often win, as they don't receive jury votes. But they arguably make for the most memorable contestants. Here's where some of the most notorious villains from Survivor are today.
10 Russell Hantz
Perhaps the most infamous villain in the show's history, Russell Hantz is primarily known for his appearances on Samoa and Heroes vs. Villains - back-to-back seasons in which Hantz made it to the final tribal council. While Hantz is often praised for his strong strategic gameplay and penchant for finding hidden immunity idols, his poor social game always proved his downfall.
Hantz is still quite active in the Survivor community through his YouTube channel The Russell Hantz Show, in which he analyzes each new episode of the show.
9 Brandon Hantz
The Hantz family is infamous within the Survivor community, and that reception continued with Brandon Hantz, Russell's nephew. Brandon played a solid game throughout South Pacific, but he became one of the show's most notorious villains for his temper and unstable behavior throughout Caramoan.
Things eventually escalated to the point where Brandon dumped the tribe's food reserves all over the sand, leading him to be voted out in an impromptu tribal council. Brandon has since appeared on his uncle's show, the most recent appearance occurring in April 2020.
8 Tony Vlachos
Tony Vlachos is what would happen if Russell Hantz was a friendly person. Like Russell, Tony became famous for finding hidden immunity idols, backstabbing his allies, and orchestrating blindsides. Fortunately, his social game proved strong enough that he walked away with an 8-1 victory on Cagayan.
Vlachos was instantly declared one of the show's strongest players...a reputation he solidified after returning for Winners at War. While playing a completely different style of game, he became the show's second two-time winner after Sandra Diaz-Twine.
7 Ben Browning
When it comes to Survivor villains, it doesn't get much more notorious than Ben Browning. Browning competed on Samoa alongside Russell Hantz, but he didn't last nearly as long, being the third person voted out (and fourth eliminated following Mike's medical evacuation.
Ben acted in an extremely caustic and unlikable manner throughout his brief time on the show, proving physically aggressive during challenges and calling Yasmin "ghetto trash". Browning later appeared on a special Survivor episode of The Price Is Right in 2016 but did not compete.
6 Colton Cumbie
Cumbie is another one of Survivor's most notorious villains, appearing in both One World and Blood vs. Water. Cumbie quickly proved himself one of the most unlikable contestants in the show's history due to his God complex and derogatory remarks aimed at other players. He was eventually evacuated owing to acute appendicitis and quit Blood vs. Water in a huff after not getting his way.
Cumbie is living a relatively quiet post-Survivor life and generally stays out of the spotlight. Unfortunately, his fiancé and fellow Blood vs. Water contestant, Caleb Bankston, passed away in a work accident in 2014 at the age of 27.
5 Jeff Varner
Jeff Varner has appeared on Survivor three times, but Game Changers would prove his last. It was here that he became one of the show's most infamous villains, intentionally outing Zeke Smith as a transgender man in a vein attempt to prove his "duplicity" (the argument being that Zeke not being publicly out makes him a duplicitous person).
Jeff Probst was quick to rebuke Varner for the decision, and he was promptly voted off. Varner was reportedly fired from his real estate job as a result of the controversy, but he has since found work with another company.
4 Jerri Manthey
Jerri Manthey has a spot in Survivor history as the show's first "villainess". Serving as the main antagonist of The Australian Outback, Manthey generated tons of hate owing to her sour and sardonic personality.
She was later booed off the stage at the All Stars reunion show, further solidifying her place in Survivor lore. Like Colton Cumbie, Manthey has mostly stayed out of the public eye, although she did host a Survivor After Show on thestream.tv.
3 Jonny Fairplay
Jonny Fairplay, real name Jon Dalton, remains one of the most infamous and deceitful villains in Survivor history, known primarily for his time on Pearl Islands (although he later returned for Micronesia). It was here that he concocted the famous "Grandma lie", in which his friend Dan told Fairplay that his grandmother was dead during the loved ones visit.
She wasn't actually deceased, and the other contestants allowed him to win so he could "learn more information" from Dan about her passing. In December 2020, he was caught stealing furniture and a necklace from this same grandmother.
2 Parvati Shallow
Despite being a villain (more of an antihero, really...), Parvati Shallow remains one of the most popular Survivor contestants. She has competed on the show four times, beginning on Cook Islands and proceeding to Micronesia (a season she would win), Heroes vs. Villains (in which she placed on the villains tribe), and Winners at War.
She is perhaps best known for being a part of the Black Widow Brigade. Unfortunately, her performance in Winners at War proved somewhat disappointing, finishing fifteenth and missing the merge.
1 Boston Rob
Perhaps the most famous contestant in Survivor history, Boston Rob has competed in five seasons and appeared as a mentor in Island of the Idols alongside fellow Survivor legend Sandra Diaz-Twine. Boston Rob has long been regarded for his cutthroat approach to the game, and he has earned himself the reputation as Survivor's greatest strategic mastermind.
Unfortunately, it was just this reputation that resulted in his swift elimination from Winners at War, becoming the sixth person voted off.
