Netflix's latest release, Ginny & Georgia, is Gilmore Girls meets Big Little Lies. A single 30-something mother raising kids in an East Coast town might sound eerily familiar, but the cast of characters stands out on their own, making it easy to see them as individuals rather than recycled formulas.
There's a lot to like in this bunch of characters, nobody being one-dimensional or representing a typical high school drama stereotype. It's hard to choose a fan-favorite on a show where everyone has that small New England town charm, but there are some personalities that stand out from the rest.
12 Georgia
Georgia Miller aka Mary Atkins teetered the line between southern charmer and ruthless murderer over the course of Season 1. While, initially, her crimes seemed justified (shooting her abusive step-father and running a gambling ring to have money to raise her daughter), ultimately Georgia blurred the line between protective and downright dangerous.
Audience members spend most of the season not sure if they can trust Georgia, but her charm makes viewers want to be on her side. It isn't until the last episode, where she spreads her ex-husband's (who she killed) ashes in celebratory fireworks and subtly admits to doing so that fans see who she really is, and that person might just be evil.
11 Abby
The 'A' in MANG went through a lot of her own struggles during the season. From her parents' impending divorce to duct-taping her thighs indicating some kind of body image woes, Abby was not exempt from pain.
However, she constantly lashed out at her friends for not being there for her when she was rarely present for them, she let Ginny take the fall when they were all caught shoplifting, and in the end, she blamed everything on Ginny, even when she was partially responsible for all the secrets among their friend group.
10 Norah
Norah was the quietest member of MANG, often being Switzerland in arguments and running off with her boyfriend Jordan if the group got to be too much.
Norah didn't do anything wrong, but she also didn't do much of anything. She followed either Abby or Max's leads blindly, and never spoke for herself.
9 Hunter
Hunter was presented as the 'good guy' option for Ginny as opposed to Marcus's 'bad boy'. He was a diligent boyfriend; he wrote her a song and read Pride & Prejudice so they'd have something to talk about. Hunter was perfect on paper.
But the Hunter the audience sees in later episodes is not as kind as he led on. He challenges Ginny to the 'oppression Olympics' when they argue over who should have won the essay contest, and punches an already injured Marcus for sleeping with Ginny. In the heat of their fight, he says some really hurtful things and shows his true colors under his nice guy facade.
8 Zion
Ginny's dad and Georgia's penguin, Zion, appeared a la Christopher Hayden on a motorcycle toward the latter half of the season. He was an established photographer and writer and expressed interest in finally settling down and becoming a family.
Of course, this completely throws Georgia, who is in a committed relationship with Paul, for a loop and leads her to regress on any growth she has made. Zion eventually sees that Georgia is thriving in Wellsbury without him, and lets her go, hurting Ginny in the process.
7 Austin
Ginny's half-brother, Austin, spends most of the series doing Harry Potter spells and writing his imprisoned father letters. His wholesome and sweet demeanor makes it difficult to watch him get bullied and to see him discover that Georgia was forging his father's responses the whole time, having never sent a single one of his letters.
Austin displayed his similarities to his mother when he stabbed Zach, his bully, with a pencil and skipped school for a week. He also lit Georgia's garden on fire with his cousin Caleb. The only person that was ever fully there for Austin was Ginny, and he needed her desperately.
6 Ginny
Ginny came to Wellsbury as the new girl, someone who had never quite had friends because of her nomadic lifestyle. She quickly was befriended by Maxine Baker, who let her into her sophomore clique.
Ginny's personality fluctuated between tender-hearted and delusionally selfish; protecting her brother's safety and her mother's heart, but also cheating on her boyfriend and verbally attacking her parents. At the end of the day, Ginny is a good soul, who just happens to also be a hormonal teenager.
5 Paul
Georgia's handsome love interest and Wellsbury's mayor Paul Randolph displayed a generous heart when he gave Georgia a job despite her having no political experience. He was constantly trying to do right by the town and was the one to call Georgia out on her behavior in more than one instance.
Paul never got to see the side of Georgia that viewers did, so it was hard to watch him trust her so faithfully and propose, not knowing what he could possibly be getting himself into. Despite his claim that they both are cut from the same cloth, Paul's naivety could ultimately get the best of him.
4 Max
Sweet Maxine took Ginny under her wing instantly and introduced her to a group of friends she had never had. Max radiated positivity and was fiercely loyal, up until the point in which Ginny betrayed her.
Max's personality could be extremely intense at times, and her tendency to make everything about her and never give others room to speak could be frustrating. But a lot of Max's energy was a result of overcompensating for her own insecurities, and she always meant well.
3 Ellen
Max and Marcus's mother Ellen was Georgia's first friend when she moved to Wellsbury. The two got high together, complained about their kids, and chaperoned Sophomore Sleepover with one another.
Ellen's unending kindness made it especially difficult for viewers to watch her learn that Georgia had been keeping things from her. Specifically, information about both of their kids.
2 Marcus
Stoner, skateboarding, wanna-be motorcyclist Marcus seemed like the jerk love interest in the beginning. He slept with Ginny when she first got to town and was always mood and brooding.
Marcus ended up being one of the most likable characters on the show. He was open about his mental health struggles and forward about his love for Ginny. Despite failing to do so at times, he wanted to be good, which made it easy for viewers to fall in love with him.
1 Joe
Joe, the owner of Blue Farm, and a modern-day Luke Danes was the nicest person in Wellsbury. He put up a front of being cold and uninterested but provided Georgia with everything she asked for (or demanded).
Flashbacks of Joe, revealing him to be a kid who gave away his sunglasses and inspired young Georgia made him even more lovable. His unrequited love for her years later was painful to watch, knowing that he deserved so much more.
