The Alien franchise will return to comics this March in an all-new ongoing series from Marvel. Written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson (Empyre: Captain America), with art by Salvador Larroca (Doctor Doom), the book is the first in a new line of Alien comics coming from Marvel over the next year.
The franchise will be coming to Marvel after 30-plus years at Dark Horse Comics. The company published an extensive line of Alien comics (some of which Marvel is now reprinting), including William Gibson’s unused screenplay for Alien 3. Dark Horse's most lasting contribution to the mythos may be Alien Vs Predator, which predated the two feature films that were subsequently made around the concept. Now Marvel is taking over, and the publisher promises to deliver the goods.
Marvel just sent out a press release announcing the title, creative team and a brief synopsis. Gabriel Cruz, a mercenary from Weyland-Yutani, the giant mega corporation featured in the Alien movies, must fight a new breed of Xenomorph; the stakes are raised even higher when his child is caught in the middle of the conflict. In addition to promising fans they would see both new and classic characters from throughout the franchise, Marvel also emphasizes the horror aspect of both the movie series and the book—writer Johnson has previously written Marvel Zombies: Resurrection.
Both creators expressed their enthusiasm for the project, with Johnson saying he was “floored” to not only just write an Alien comic, but the first one in a new line. He mentions watching the first movie as a child and the effect it had on him. Artist Larroca echoes these sentiments, saying he, too, watched the film as a child, and praised the Xenomorph design. Much like Johnson, he never believed he would work on an Alien-related book. They both hope fans enjoy reading the book as much as they enjoyed working on it.
The Alien franchise thrived at Dark Horse Comics, and the publisher's output may have been even better than the post-Aliens movies. The Alien Vs Predator books set the gold standard for franchise crossovers. Marvel has some big shoes to fill, but with creators such as Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Salvador Larrroca on board, creators who are life-long fans and understand what makes the franchise work, fans can rest easy knowing it is in good hands. No exact release date has been given, nor any details about any other books, but expect more information in the coming months.
