The YELLOWSTONE Franchise Grows Bigger with Two Seasons of 1923 and Other Eras to Be Explored

Taylor Sheridan’s plans for his epic Yellowstone Western series franchise are growing! As a fan of Yellowstone and its prequel series 1883, I’m up for seeing as much of the Dutton family history and story as possible!

It’s been announced that the upcoming prequel series 1923 will now consist of two eight-episode seasons. The series will focus on the Dutton family’s “next two generations as they struggle to survive historic drought, lawlessness and prohibition, and an epidemic of cattle theft; all battled beneath the cloud of Montana’s great depression, which preceded the nation by almost a decade. The show will also touch on the end of World War I, which occurred in 1918.”

It’s also explained the story will focus on the “construction of the sprawling Yellowstone ranch in Montana, the series is also shooting in South Africa, Tanzania, and Malta, to give a sense of the saga’s scope.”

It’s also been revealed that Sheridan is also looking to develop two other limited prequel series that will encompass the struggle to hang onto the ranch in the 1940s and the 1960s. Those will also make for great stories! I imagine that could also lead to shows that are set in the 70s and 80s.

The cast for 1923 is led by Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. Ford will play Jacob Dutton, the head of the Yellowstone ranch and brother of James Dutton. Mirren will portray Cara Dutton, the wife to Jacob. They are joined by James Badge Dale, Robert Patrick. Brandon Sklenar, Sebastian Roché, Darren Mann, Michelle Randolph, Marley Shelton, Brian Geraghty, Aminah Nieves, and Julia Schlaepfer. Negotiations are underway to bring back the cast for another season.

There are also plans for a Yellowstone spinoff 6666, shooting on the storied Four Sixes ranch in Texas where much of 1883 was shot.
