TMNT is Turning a Goofy Group of Allies into Dark Villains

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #125

One of the goofiest groups that have been added to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles lore is easily the Punk Frogs. At least that’s how they would be described upon their introduction. Now, however, the Punk Frogs are no joke and have been reworked as a villainous group of anarchist mutants. The stark contrast between the first Punk Frogs team and the latest one is striking as TMNT turns a silly group of enemies-turned-allies into incredibly dark and insanely cool villains.

In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #125 by Kevin Eastman, Tom Waltz, Sophie Campbell, and Pablo Tunica, the Turtles are faced with the all-new threat of the Punk Frogs who have infiltrated Mutant Town. The anarchist group attacks the Turtles and burns the TMNT dojo to the ground after the Turtles aren’t able to give them the information they are after regarding a missing mutant they’re looking for. With that act of aggression, the Punk Frogs have become sworn enemies of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles just like the first group of mutated frogs, but with one key difference.

The original group of Punk Frogs made their debut in the ‘80s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon in the episode titled “Invasion of the Punk Frogs.” In the episode, Shredder doses a group of four unsuspecting frogs with a canister of mutant-creating ooze. Shredder then convinces them that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are evil and need to be stopped, making the Punk Frogs the initial villains of the episode. However, once they realize that Shredder is the true villain, the Punk Frogs join forces with the Turtles and become their allies from that point on. As shown in their comic book debut with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #125, this new team of Punk Frogs are a far cry from their original depiction.

The Punk Frogs in the ‘80s TMNT cartoon had a more surfer-dude aesthetic as they wore Hawaiian shirts with trunks. The Punk Frogs in the comics are depicted as a group of human-sized mutated frogs who have taken on the classic Punk Rock aesthetic including studded leather clothing and tattoos. TMNT’s new version of the Punk Frogs live up to their name in a much more fitting way as they better capture the stereotypical "punk rock" look and attitude of the genre.

While the original Punk Frogs were tricked into fighting the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and then became their allies, the new version of the team has proven to be a dark group of villains. The new Punk Frogs burn the Turtle’s home base to the ground just because they aren’t helpful to them, and before that they harass and assault Casey Jones for almost no reason at all. Now that the Punk Frogs have shown their true, villainous colors, they have cemented their new role as the sworn enemies of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and they have never looked cooler.
