Based on solicitations for April’s Star Wars comics, upcoming issues are becoming obsessed with heist plots involving mystery objects. Multiple titles are incorporating heists for smugglers and dark Force users alike.
In recent years, Star Wars comics have stirred controversy for undercutting the original trilogy and emphasizing the story gaps of the sequels. When Darth Vader introduced Exegol’s Final Order fleet long before The Rise of Skywalker, fans took issue with it existing prior to the second Death Star as seen in Return of the Jedi. Comics have arguably complicated the saga in ways that have been unnecessary, when they should have been expanding on the films to provide logical context. Soon, Star Wars comics will collectively tell simpler stories, but at the cost of a cliche.
As revealed by StarWars.com, April’s Star Wars titles largely involve heists, centered around undisclosed items. In Han Solo & Chewbacca #2, the smuggler duo teams up with Greedo for a job with Jabba the Hutt, going after a mysterious object. Fans know that the task goes wrong, as Jabba eventually pits Greedo against Han and Chewie for owing him credits. In The Halcyon Legacy #4, Lando Calrissian and the pirate Hondo are competing in a heist for a “priceless jewel.” Meanwhile, the Knights of Ren are working for Qi’ra in Crimson Reign #4 as they break into a vault at Fortress Vader to retrieve an unspecified prize, teased as being important to the Sith. The issues appear unrelated to one another, with heists that are specific to the time in which the titles are set. It’s a strange coincidence for half of April’s announced comics to have similar plot lines.
Although the upcoming issue of Doctor Aphra doesn’t fit into the trend, past issues have also featured heists involving artifacts in the Star Wars galaxy. The cliche premise is odd for so many Star Wars comics to have in common at the same time. Considering the vast scale of the universe, there should be more potential conflicts than Indiana Jones-style adventures. With most of the stories shrouding the heists in mystery, they could be related. However, they are likely confidential in their overlapping ideas.
While heists are characteristic of smugglers like Han Solo, Chewbacca, Greedo, Hondo, and Lando, the original Knights of Ren are unlikely perpetrators. Their mission for Crimson Dawn is teased to lead to a confrontation with Darth Vader, causing the conspiracy to become a failed attempt to wage war on the Empire. The upcoming issue of Star Wars comics are set to release throughout April 2022.
