The Vampire Diaries Vs. Teen Wolf: Why Matt Is The Better Human Character (& Why It's Stiles)

The Vampire Diaries and Teen Wolf were each popular teen shows about the supernatural. Both series featured several supernatural creatures, but there was one big similarity between them. Each series included a central character that was human and remained that way from start to finish (Matt Donovan and Stiles Stilinski, respectively). Yet, at the same time, both characters experienced a type of supernatural possession that did not strip them of being human.

Matt and Stiles went through a lot throughout their respective shows, and thus they had different experiences with the supernatural. While Matt was struggling between wishing to protect his friends, hating vampires, and wanting to protect the town's humans, Stiles was always on Scott's side and had fewer qualms about the supernatural world.

10 Matt: Helps Kill Finn

The Mikaelsons are the hardest vampires to kill. As Originals, only a white oak stake can kill them. So when the Mystic Falls gang creates a plan to kill the Originals, they are prepared to deliver the final blow.

Matt is the first of the group to kill an Original. He digs the stake into Finn, taking out the eldest Mikaelson sibling. Matt's actions cause the ripple effect of every vampire in Finn's sire line dying afterward. It's a bold move for a human character.

9 Stiles: Knows When Scott Becomes A Werewolf

Scott doesn't keep things from Stiles, so when he starts showing signs of something different, Stiles looks into it. After they realize Scott is now a werewolf, Stiles helps Scott go through transformations on full moons. However, Scott never keeps his supernatural abilities from Stiles, and instead, the two work together to control Scott's impulses and abilities until Scott adjusts to them fully.

Matt, however, is the last to learn the truth about vampires, werewolves, and witches. It is a shock to him, and it takes Matt some time to deal with what he learns about the supernatural in Mystic Falls.

8 Matt: Helps Ground The Series In Humanity

Matt is lucky enough to remain human throughout the entirety of the series. But, unfortunately, such a thing was scarce in Mystic Falls, especially for a central character. So, Matt spends more time vouching for the humans of Mystic Falls than being concerned about Stefan, Damon, or any other vampires that make their way through town.

Matt even acts as the trigger for Elena's humanity. Stefan and Damon had tried numerous avenues to get Elena's humanity back to no avail. But, when they kill Matt in front of Elena, and she believes him to be dead, her emotions start coming in, including relief and joy, when she realizes Matt was wearing the Gilbert Ring and will wake up again.

7 Stiles: Does Research About The Supernatural

Regardless of the situation, there is a good chance Stiles will spend his time researching whatever the next supernatural creature or threat is. He and Lydia work as a detective duo regarding the supernatural, especially considering this world is brand new to all of them. Stiles's intelligence helps the McCall Pack determine what their enemy is and how to defeat it.

Although Matt gets involved in helping take down whoever the villain of the season is, his research skills and intelligence in that area are not as developed.

6 Matt: He Is Relatable

With everything going on in Mystic Falls and how the supernatural affects Matt's life, it's not surprising he has a hard time wrapping his mind around its existence.

Even if Matt's hatred feelings did not make him popular, it made sense, given his experiences, that Matt would not simply accept the presence of a world he thought was fiction.

5 Stiles: Close Friendships And Potential To Lead

Stiles holds significant relationships with many members of the McCall Pack. Although Stiles's most important relationship is his friendship with Scott, he still holds a strong connection with Lydia. Stiles's connection to Lydia was so strong that Lydia acted as Stiles's anchor when he, Scott, and Allison searched for the Nemeton. As for leaders, as a researcher and trusted by the Pack, Stiles does have the capability to lead the McCall Pack, and Stiles may even have been as good a leader as Scott.

This is an area Matt never had a chance to get involved in. Stefan and Damon were usually in charge of the plans, and Elena often got involved with them. While Caroline and Bonnie certainly had a say, as a vampire and a witch, being the only human left made Matt the odd one out, and even if he disagreed, Matt did not have the power to change anyone's minds.

4 Matt: Protecting The Humans In Mystic Falls

When Matt determined that human lives would always mean less to vampires, he focused on protecting humans.

While Matt didn't always succeed at keeping humans safe from vampires, it was a part of his character that made sense, especially after what happened to Vicki. It's good that someone was looking out for the unaware and powerless.

3 Stiles: Sense Of Humor

One of the biggest differences between Stiles and Matt is their sense of humor. Stiles is one of the funniest characters in Teen Wolf and always has something comical to say or has a sarcastic comment to use. His reactions to things and humorous comments made him a fan favorite.

Matt, on the other hand, does not have that charismatic attitude Stiles has. Instead, Matt is more of a dramatic character than one that could be looked for to make a comedic comment.

2 Matt: He Worked

For the most part, Matt did not have a stable-parent home. His father had left years ago, and his mother was in and out of the house so often Matt was basically left to be the adult in the house. So to support himself, Matt got a job at the Mystic Grill.

All the while, he also continued to go to school and deal with supernatural drama. Although Matt's grades were not at the top of the class, he managed to ensure he graduated from high school and then got involved in a protection program.

1 Stiles: Comes Back For Series Finale

Stiles is featured a lot less in season 6. In the first half of the season, he appears recurringly, taken by Ghost Riders and stuck in another realm. While trapped, his friends determine that someone they care for is missing and search for ways to save him.

In the back half of the season, Stiles is at FBI training and is missing in most of the episodes until he reappears in the series finale. But, he is not alone, and Derek joins him as they return to Beacon Hills for the final war of the show. Fans were really glad to see him cementing his place as a great character.
