Hook: Smee’s Secret Sex Addiction - Theory Explained

A fan theory about the Peter Pan movie Hook says that the character Smee has a secret sex addiction, and while it is a PG-rated movie, there's actually pretty valid evidence behind the claim! Played by the late Bob Hoskins, Smee is the ever-loyal first mate of Dustin Hoffman's Captain Hook. Unlike other, more threatening takes on the Peter Pan villain, Hoffman's Hook is a neurotic, emotional mess, and it's Smee who keeps a level head in the film, which is just one of many ways Hook is a unique take on a classic tale.

Released in 1991 and directed by Steven Spielberg, Hook is the story of a Peter Pan (Robin Williams) who has grown up and forgotten who he is. Now with a wife and two children, Peter Pan is a humorless lawyer who worries about his children doing anything dangerous. While on a trip to England, Peter Pan leaves his kids with a babysitter, but when he returns he discovers that they've both been abducted by his old nemesis, Captain Hook. While he refuses to remember that he's actually Peter Pan, Tinkerbell — played by Julia Roberts — shows up and brings Peter to Neverland.

When Peter Pan awakes, the world of Neverland is revealed as a busy, grungy city infested with pirate scum. Soon the focus turns to Smee, who is in town to fetch a new hook for his captain. When he approaches the town brothel, one of the women shouts, "Put your faces on, girls! Here comes Smee!" The other women quickly turn their attention to the first mate, who they excitedly welcome into the brothel. Because of this one passing scene, a fan theory [via Reddit] posits that Smee is a regular at the establishment, and may even be addicted to its services!

Aside from his obvious familiarity with the ladies, the theory takes into account Smee's enviable position as Hook's right hand. While Hook seems to regard the rest of his crew as "stupid, sorry, parasitic sacks of entrails," he actually seems to like and trust Smee. That, along with his official position as first mate, would suggest that Smee is fairly well paid by Captain Hook. Yet — save for his nicely-polished gold earring — Smee dresses no better than the lowly "sacks of entrails" that comprise the rest of Hook's crew. Based on this, the theory reasons that Smee must be spending all of his earnings on the women — explaining both their familiarity with him as well as his seeming poverty.

The main issue with the Hook fan theory is that rests on the assumption that Smee is paid more than the rest of the crew. Given his trusted, elevated status, it's certainly possible that Smee is well-paid, but it's also entirely possible that Captain Hook keeps all of the riches for himself. In that case, how could Smee afford such regular trips to the brothel? One answer is that Smee is skimming money from Hook behind his back. At the end of Hook, when things are going south for Hook during his showdown with Peter Pan, instead of jumping in to defend his captain, Smee begins scooping up various bits of loot from the captain's quarters. This at least hints that Smee's loyalties to his captain are limited. No matter what Smee's salary is, those ladies definitely know him very well, and there's no doubt he's spent a good deal of time at the brothel.
