The New Ms. Marvel Graphic Novel Is A Dream Come True For Its Creators

This September, Marvel will release a new original graphic novel starring Ms. Marvel, and working on the book was a dream come true for its creative team of writer Nadia Shammas and artist Nabi H. Ali. Titled Ms. Marvel: Stretched Thin, the book will be aimed at middle-school-aged readers and will be published by Scholastic as part of its Graphix line.

Ms. Marvel, AKA Kamala Khan, has become a genuine breakthrough character, having recieved mainstream news coverage since her debut. Her launch title was critically acclaimed, drawing praise from sources both in and out of the comics industry. She has gone on to become one of Marvel’s most popular characters and has made the leap outside of comics, appearing in several animated shows and the Marvel's Avengers video game. She will make her live-action debut in a Disney Plus show coming next year. BUT Until then, young readers can see Kamala Khan stretched to her breaking point - literally. In the book, a mysterious robot has infiltrated the Avengers Mansion, and Ms. Marvel must stop it while trying to juggle school, social life, and being a superhero - all of the elements that make up a great Ms. Marvel story.

A press release from Marvel provides readers not only with the book’s cover and premise, but also thoughts on the graphic novel from its creators. For writer Nadia Shammas, the introduction of Ms. Marvel helped bring her back to superhero comics. Citing Ms. Marvel’s relatability, Shammas stated it would have meant so much to have a character like Kamala sooner and is honored to be able to contribute to Ms. Marvel’s adventures: "the introduction of Kamala Khan is the thing that rekindled my interest in the Marvel Universe, and in super hero comics in general." Illustrator Nabi H. Ali was turned onto the character thanks to a high school teacher. He praised Ms. Marvel for avoiding stereotypes and having a “color blind” approach to storytelling. "I know what it would have meant to me to have Kamala in my life even sooner, and so I'm really honored to be able to add to her story and that of her family and friends," Ali said.

Since her introduction in 2013, Ms. Marvel has become one of Marvel’s most popular and inspirational characters. Kamala Khan is a serious win for representation, showing a Muslim character in a well-rounded fashion. Fans have responded to Kamala Khan’s geekiness and affability, with Ms. Marvel trade collections dominating best-seller lists; the book has won awards as well, including a Hugo and a Dragon Award. Not only is she inspiring legions of fans, but creators as well—all of whom see something of themselves in Ms. Marvel.

"As a Muslim convert, it also meant a lot for me to see openly Muslim characters. I'm honored that I got to explore Kamala's world and that I'm helping introduce her to new generations of readers like me." - Nabi H. Ali

For creators Shammas and Ali, Ms. Marvel is an inspiration, and both are clearly thrilled to be working on the character and introducing her to younger audiences. Ms. Marvel: Stretched Thin goes on sale September 7.
