Fans of comic books and fine artwork everywhere can rejoice with the release of iconic artist Alex Ross' new poster book from Marvel Comics. A beloved artist, Ross is known for his photorealistic and painterly styled body of work across both Marvel and DC. He is currently working on a new series called Marvel that shows off some of the wildest realities in the Marvel Universe as well as giving that supremely talented Ross an excuse to cut loose with even wilder artwork.
The artist is arguably most well known for his work on the seminal classics, Kingdom Come and Marvels (written by Mark Waid and Kurt Busiek, respectively). The latter is a history lesson on the Marvel Universe told from the perspective of photojournalist Phil Sheldon; the former is a look at a possible future for the DC Universe, telling the story of a world-weary Superman leading the charge against a violent and nihilistic new class of superhero. Both stories represent just how skilled Ross is at what he does, as his unique style is just as well suited to illustrate a scrappy reporter as it is a fallen god.
A preview from SYFY reveals images from Ross' new art compilation, The Alex Ross Marvel Comics Poster Book. Published by Abrams Comicarts, the book contains special and frameable 11x10 illustrations of various Marvel heroes including Captain America, Thor, Hulk, and more. It will also contain commentary from Ross along with sketches and other special features. The collection will hit stores on April 20th with a 24.99$ U.S. price tag.
The images are pulled from a special mural Ross designed for Marvel's corporate headquarters in New York. called "Timeless", the mural is a huge spread of Marvel's most iconic characters drawn at a life-sized scale in their classic costumes. According to Ross, the title comes from the fact that he believes these classic-costumed variants of Marvel's finest are the ones who will always stand out as the definitive takes on the characters. "Timeless" exists in the form of a pull-out poster in this new release. So fans can get their hands on an admittedly smaller version of Ross' mind-blowing mural with a purchase of the poster book.
Alex Ross is a living legend with a keen understanding of what makes superheroes tick. The chance to get 35 prints of his work in all of their detailed and shiny glory is one that very few comic fans would pass up. Plus this is probably the only chance a lot of people will have to have to put "Timeless" up on a wall in their own home.
