In a new preview for the upcoming issue of Marvel's Darth Vader comic, the Dark Lord himself is being hunted. Having returned to the lava world of Mustafar as punishment for failing his master Darth Sidious after Empire Strikes Back, a broken Vader is evading the Emperor's Sith assassin known as Ochi of Bestoon. However, Darth Vader #9 reveals that Ochi will also have help from a group of droid assassins, also looking to eliminate Darth Vader at all costs.
In previous issues of Darth Vader, the Dark Lord went on a quest of truth and discovery into his own past, as well as the past of his late wife Padmé Amidala. This all was motivated by his son Luke's rejection of him on Cloud City during the epic conclusion of Empire Strikes Back. Not only was Vader's personal mission not sanctioned by his master, the Emperor, but Vader ignored Sidious' summons as well. When Vader eventually did return to his master, the answers he'd found on his quest had completely unbalanced him, and his foundation in the Dark Side was very much shaken. As a result, the Emperor determined to punish his wayward apprentice, breaking him and taking away his lightsaber before dumping him on the same lava riverbank where Sidious found the fallen Anakin Skywalker and subsequently rebuilt him as Darth Vader, Dark Lord of the Sith.
Vader has been left with the task of rebuilding himself in recent issues - from Greg Pak and Raffaele Ienco - while also finding a means to reconnect with his personal darkness before his master will allow him to tap into the Dark Side's power once more. However, the Emperor has also sent his assassin Ochi of Bestoon to kill Vader, providing the Dark Lord with even further challenge and trials. During a brief break in their conflict, Vader was granted a Sith Wayfinder by the Eye of Webbish Bog, which he now intends to use to unlock the hidden secrets of the Emperor. However, he still has to evade Ochi in the preview for Darth Vader #9, who's allied himself with the Droid Crush Pirates of Bestoon to eliminate the Dark Lord. Here's the preview and synopsis for the issue from Marvel Comics:
- STAR WARS DARTH VADER #9
- (W) Greg Pak (A) Raffaele Ienco (CA) Aaron Kuder
- THE ASSASSIN RETURNS!
- In his search for vengeance in the depths of MUSTAFAR, DARTH VADER has seized the mysterious key to the EMPEROR'S greatest secret.
- But the key itself needs a key - which only the deadly assassin OCHI OF BESTOON seems to have. Vader and Ochi are in for the fight of their lives with the fate of the Emperor in the balance - but how much of this is all PALPATINE'S plan?
- And what happens when the SITH LORD and the SITH ASSASSIN start to figure that plan out?
The preview depicts Vader on the run in the issue's first few pages, though that doesn't necessarily mean that he's helpless. Vader proves that he's still a very capable warrior, even without his power in the Force or lightsaber, dispatching multiple droid hunters with a simple piece of scrap metal he's using as a blade. As Vader moves and strikes from the shadows, the lead assassin taunts Vader for being a "softbody," realizing that somebody (Sidious) saw value in Vader and used their resources to make sure that his dying flesh would be preserved. As a result, it seems as though this issue will be heavily focused on Vader's status as a cyborg, being "more machine than man," as Obi-Wan Kenobi once described him.
In any case, the synopsis provides some more interesting details beyond what's seen in the preview pages alone, revealing that while Vader may have the Wayfinder, Ochi holds another piece of the puzzle that Vader will need to acquire if he hopes to learn his master's secrets. While it remains to be seen if the Emperor wants Vader to learn those secrets or not, the synopsis indicates that Vader and Ochi will unite for some unknown reason. It seems as though Star Wars and Darth Vader fans will just have to pick up the issue to find out when it releases on January 13 from Marvel Comics.
