Modern Family: 5 Times Jay & Cam Were Secret BFFs (& 5 They Were Frenemies)

Jay Pritchett is Cameron Tucker's father-in-law on Modern Family. The two men didn't start off on the best foot because of Jay's close-minded nature but as time went on they realized they had more in common than just Mitchell. Jay and Cameron are both masculine in their own way and have a love for football, woodworking, and competition.

But that's not to say that these two don't have their downfalls. Between Jay's lack of emotion and Cameron's love for drama, the men don't always see eye to eye throughout the series, which is why Modern Family is so relatable. Family doesn't always get along but they're always there for you if you're in a pinch.

10 Secret BFFs: Chili Buddies

In season 10's "SuperShowerBabyBowl," Jay invites Cam to make his famous chili recipe with him at 5 am on Super Bowl morning. Cameron is honored that Jay trusted him and showed up at his front door on Super Bowl day. However, when Cameron called Jay to tell him he was at the front door, Jay sounded like he was still in bed. Cameron thought Jay forgot about him. In reality, Jay was up and waiting for Cameron but wanted to play it cool.

The two men finally realized their mistakes by the end of the episode but it was adorable to see how much both of them cared. Jay even made matching t-shirts!

9 Frenemies: Jay Lied To His Friends About Who Cam Was

In the first couple of seasons, Jay wasn't completely comfortable with his son being gay. He loved Mitchell but never pictured himself having a gay son. Over 11 seasons, Jay changed his tune and learned to accept and love Mitchell and Cam but it was hard at the beginning.

In the episode "Fifteen Percent," Jay was with his country club buddies when he ran into Cam, and introduced him as "Mitchell's friend." At that time, Mitch and Cam were together for at least six years and had a baby. It was a low point for Jay.

8 Secret BFFs: Football

It's not just the Super Bowl that Jay and Cam enjoy watching together, it's football in general. In fact, one could say that sports are what brought these two closer together. Jay is the only one in the family who cares about sports and watches it heavily. And funny enough, Cameron is the only person he can talk to about it.

When Cameron started coaching football at the high school, he had Jay help him out in season 10. With both of their mindsets at work, Cam couldn't lose.

7 Frenemies: Jay Didn't Support Cam & Mitch's Wedding

Knowing Jay in season 11, it's shocking that there was a time when he didn't support Mitch and Cam's desire to get married. While the two were in the midst of planning their dream wedding and trying to save as much money as they could, Mitch realizes that Jay doesn't want the wedding to happen.

Jay never invited any of his friends, told anyone, and wasn't helping financially. Mitchell compared it to Claire's wedding where Jay was heavily involved. After an argument, Mitchell suggested that Jay shouldn't come to their wedding and Cameron agreed.

6 Secret BFFs: Racquetball

In the episode "Moon Landing," Jay and Cam take it upon themselves to do some bonding through a friendly game of racquetball. The two of them playing a game by themselves is proof enough of their growing friendship.

While the day started out well, it came crashing down when their butts accidentally touched while changing in the locker room. Cam called it a "moon landing" and didn't see what the big deal was but Jay was freaked out. Luckily, he realized he was being ridiculous and apologized to Cam by the end of the day.

5 Frenemies: Express Christmas

In season 3's "Express Christmas," the family realizes they're not going to be with each other until the New Year and decide to celebrate Christmas early. Cameron and Jay were in charge of wrapping gifts but the afternoon goes south.

Cameron was far more interested in wrapping gifts than Jay was. Every time Cam tried getting to know Jay on a more personal level, Jay shut him down. To prove his friendship, Cameron gifted Jay the cork of the first wine bottle they drank together. Jay, however, was unaware that even happened and made Cam feel small.

4 Secret BFFs: Home Improvement

Cameron and Mitchell both have their strong suits but when it comes to home improvement, that's Cam's area of expertise. Mitchell doesn't know how to safely use tools and ends up messing everything up when he tries. To save Mitchell from hurting himself and others, Cam usually takes over and gets help from Jay.

A notable home improvement moment between the two men was when Cam and Jay built Lily's backyard playhouse together. Sure, Mitchell was annoyed but it was a good bonding moment between his father and his partner.

3 Frenemies: Home Renovations

When Cameron and Mitch's kitchen caught fire, they moved into Jay and Gloria's house until the renovations were finished. At first, it was fun to have Jay, Gloria, Mitch, Cam, and their kids under one roof but after a while, everyone grew tired of each other. Mitch and Cam were annoyed with Jay because the renovations were taking too long. And Gloria wanted Cameron to move out because he was too invasive. They all made up in the end but it was a rough couple of weeks.

2 Secret BFFs: The Bar

Even though Jay and Cameron have plenty of things in common, things are still uncomfortable between the two when they're alone. In "The Party," Jay and Cam go to a sports bar to watch a game but realize how awkward it was. They had nothing to talk about. However, after some friendly wagers and a few beers, Cam and Jay were hugging like BFFs.

1 Frenemies: The Bowling League

When Cameron needed a sub for a big championship bowling game, he asked Jay to play. Cameron asking Jay to join their team is reason enough that they're closer than they realize. Jay happily obliged until he realized it was a "gays only" bowling league. Or as Cameron said. "You have to be gay to play." Jay loathed the fact that he had to pretend to be someone he wasn't. That emotion strengthened when a man started hitting on him.

By the end of the night, Jay was in better spirits and the team won the championship. But when Jay told everyone he wasn't gay, the other team took back their winning trophy and Cameron refused to talk to him.
