Mandalorian: Why Boba Fett's Helmet (Still) Has A Dent In It

Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) cleaned up his armor for The Mandalorian - so why does he still have a dent in his helmet? The famous bounty hunter made his triumphant return to Star Wars after nearly forty years thanks to The Mandalorian. The show has yet to explain how Boba Fett survived the Sarlacc pit, but he has been reunited with his iconic armor. Since only a few years passed in canon between Boba's appearances, though, his armor was just as beat up and worn down as it was in Return of the Jedi.

However, Boba Fett's role in The Mandalorian season 2 continued with episode 7 - titled "The Believer" - and gave him a makeover. Although not a lot of time seemed to pass between episodes, Boba Fett managed to clean his armor at some point. His appearance is now unlike anything before, as the beskar armor has a fresh coat of paint and looks as good as new, almost. Despite all the work Boba seemingly put into making his armor look better, the dent in his helmet noticeably remains.

The Mandalorian doesn't spend any time addressing Boba Fett's new look, so there is no explanation given for why the dent in his helmet is still there. That leaves viewers to speculate about why this defect is still present. One such reason could be that the armor is made out of beskar. The Mandalorian has repeatedly shown the strength of beskar steel, and the Armorer had to use an extremely hot specialized forge in order to melt it down. Boba Fett might have had the time and ability to repaint and clean his armor, but reforging the helmet to remove the dent would be more challenging. He may have also have had sentimental reasons for not wanting to melt down the helmet, since it once belonged to his father. One of the most famous shots from the Star Wars prequel trilogy is of young Boba pressing his head against the helmet after Jango Fett was beheaded by Mace Windu.

Official Star Wars canon materials have yet to confirm how Boba Fett's helmet got this dent in the first place (it wasn't present when Jango wore the armor). Dave Filoni was at one time going to explore this story in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, but the episode never made it to air. In that story, a younger Boba Fett came face-to-face with fellow bounty hunter Cad Bane. They have a stand-off and shoot at each other, with Cad Bane's shot hitting Boba Fett's helmet and knocking it off. This shot put the dent in the helmet. Since this is not yet confirmed to be canon, it is unknown how the current dent was put in Boba's helmet, or what possible significance it could hold for him.

So far, The Mandalorian has steered clear of providing too many answers about Boba Fett. This could be because of the rumors swirling that the character is getting a spinoff show. Disney didn't confirm such plans recently, despite announcing an Ahsoka spinoff for Rosario Dawson and another Mandalorian spinoff in Rangers of the New Republic. If Boba Fett is going to headline his own show, then that could be where the official answer to the dent arrives. Then again, perhaps The Mandalorian season 2 finale will explain why the dent remains.
