Recasting The Characters Of The Matrix (If It Was Made Today)

More than two decades after its release, The Matrix remains one of the most influential movies of the 1990s. The visionary action film from the Wachowskis introduced the idea that the world we know is a simulation run by machines. And it was an exciting, bold, and thrilling world to explore.

While the sequels were not as well-received as the first film, there were some fun new characters introduced and the established characters were explored in more depth. Before fans return to that world for The Matrix 4, why not have a look at who might have filled the roles in the original trilogy if it had been made today?

10 The Architect - Patrick Stewart

The Architect is a character who was introduced in The Matrix Reloaded and became quite controversial among fans. He serves as someone who explains to Neo what the Matrix is and what Neo's role is in it, but his exposition-heavy scene led to a lot of confusion.

The dignified and intelligent nature of the character seems like a good fit for Patrick Stewart, who has made a long career for himself playing these kinds of characters. Perhaps if he were delivering all that exposition, it would be easier to understand.

9 The Oracle - Alfre Woodard

The Oracle seems like someone who is on the same level as the Architect, although she dies with the humans. Featured in one single scene in the first film when Neo visits her to learn about his destiny, she is a caring and motherly character full of intrigue.

Alfre Woodard is an actor who could certainly deliver in a small but pivotal role like this. She has that kind of onscreen presence that makes the audience immediately care about what she is saying and take every word as being incredibly important.

8 Link - Daveed Diggs

Link is a member of the human resistance who is introduced in the second film. He is a family man who joins Morpheus' crew even after his two brothers died doing the same job. He serves as one of the more relatable heroes as well as comedic relief.

As Daveed Diggs continues to build an impressive career, this feels like a role he would easily fit into as he has experience with futuristic resistance fighting from his work in Snowpiercer. He is also a very funny actor who could bring a lighter spark to the film.

7 Commander Lock - Lance Reddick

The sequels explore the resistance in much greater depth and show that it went far beyond Morpheus and his crew. Commander Lock is the military head of the resistance and a character who sees Morpheus as a rival. He is an authoritative man yet narrow-minded as a leader.

Lance Reddick is an actor who seems to excel at playing those no-nonsense boss types who have to deal with rogue underlings. He has done so effectively in Bosch and The Wire, so it's easy to see him working in this role.

6 Niobe - Lashana Lynch

Jada Pinkett-Smith joined the series in the second film as Niobe. And while she fills the role of a romantic interest for Morpheus, she quickly proves herself to be much more compelling than just that. Niobe is a badass hero and member of the resistance who's a huge asset to the team.

One actor who is quickly proving her skills in the action genre is Lashana Lynch. After giving a strong supporting role in Captain Marvel, Lynch seems set to steal the show from Bond in No Time to Die.

5 Cypher - Bill Burr

Though the machines are the real threat to the humans in the first film, Cypher is a member of the resistance who makes for an excellent secondary villain. Dissatisfied with his life outside the Matrix, he makes a deal to turn his comrades over to the agents in exchange for being put back in his old life.

Joe Pantoliano gave a very memorable performance in the role, mixing his hard edge with a blunt sense of humor. Comedian Bill Burr feels like he could bring a similar flavor to the part. He is already building an impressive acting career with roles in The King of Staten Island and The Mandalorian.

4 Agent Smith - Andrew Scott

Agent Smith is one of the most memorable movie villains of all time. Played with a wonderful menace by Hugo Weaving, Agent Smith is a machine component of the Matrix tasked with hunting down Morpheus and his crew. He also reveals he secretly wants to escape the Matrix.

Andrew Scott is becoming one of the most noteworthy actors to watch and has proven himself to be a truly memorable villain with his role as Moriarty in Sherlock. He could easily pull off Agent Smith's calm demeanor mixed with an unhinged underlining.

3 Trinity - Lupita Nyong'o

Trinity is perhaps the most badass character in the trilogy and gets some of the best moments in all the films. She is Morpheus' most loyal follower and eventually falls in love with Neo. She is the epitome of a skilled warrior, a caring partner, and a complex hero.

Lupita Nyong'o has quickly proven herself to be one of the most versatile actors working today. From her Oscar-winning role in 12 Years a Slave to her commanding role in Black Panther to her haunting performance in Us, she could bring a lot to a role like Trinity.

2 Morpheus - Mahershala Ali

Morpheus is introduced in the first film as the mysterious figure who reveals the truth of their existence to Neo. He then proves himself to be a natural leader, a wise mentor, and a selfless fighter. Laurence Fishburne brought so much to the role, making Morpheus a truly engrossing character.

The perfect modern replacement for Morpheus would have to be Mahershala Ali. He is someone who can mix the mysterious and cool figure with a wise mentor role. Ali is always captivating on-screen and he could no doubt deliver.

1 Neo - Robert Pattinson

Keanu Reeves continued to prove himself the best action star of the '90s with his role as Neo in The Matrix. Neo is someone living a lost and isolated life before the truth is revealed to him and he is sent on a path to realizing that he is "The One."

Robert Pattinson is becoming one of Hollywood's most important leading men. While he hasn't quite proven himself to be the action star Reeves is, he can play the lost hero role quite well. He has an unmatchable brooding quality that can be very effective in the right role.
