OnePlus recently confirmed that it is collaborating with gaming studio CD Projekt Red to release a Cyberpunk 2077 version of its latest phone, the OnePlus 8T. Cyberpunk 2077 is a highly-anticipated game set in a futuristic and dystopian world with themes centered on hacking and body modification. The game has already received plenty of attention, not to mention, stars Keanu Reeves.
The OnePlus 8T is the manufacturer's latest smartphone, coming on the heels of the OnePlus 8 and the 8 Pro, released earlier in the year. The OnePlus 8T is made out of curved Gorilla Glass covering an anodized aluminum frame and is powered by a Snapdragon 865 SoC. The phone also supports 5G, is loaded with 12GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, and features four cameras on the back, along with one on the front. A noteworthy feature is the phone’s battery, as the capacity is 4,500 mAh, and supports Warp Charge 65, with the expectation of a 60-percent charge in as little as 15 minutes. The screen is a 6.55-inch AMOLED HDR10+ display, which should be great for mobile games and streaming videos, and all of this costs just $749 in the United States.
Besides the confirmation posted to Weibo by OnePlus, a Tweet by CD Projekt Red's Lead PR Manager, Radek Grabowski, states more details will be released in early November. This version of the OnePlus 8T will be available for pre-order on November 4, two weeks before the game’s launch on November 19. The collaboration between the two was announced during the recent OnePlus 8T launch event in China and Grabowski referred to the collaboration as a ‘China-exclusive partnership,’ suggesting the Cyberpunk 2077 edition might not make to other markets.
This collaboration is certainly interesting, although it is only the latest between OnePlus and another brand, after similar partnerships with the likes of McLaren, Star Wars, and Marvel in previous years. While little details are known, the OnePlus 8T Cyberpunk 2077 edition could end up with a design style that's similar to Cyberpunk 2077, along with higher specs than the base model, and a higher price point to match. There is a teaser in the announcement trailer showing a smartphone with a Cyberpunk 2077-esque call screen, but it remains to be seen whether the teaser is simply a representation based on the game’s style or the actual product.
While it seems unlikely that this collaboration could come overseas, Cyberpunk 2077 pre-orders are understood to be doing very well in China, so this could be why the two brands have opted on a more targeted and region-specific approach. Not to mention, a way to appeal to a niche audience and sell more phones in a highly contested environment where rivals, such as Huawei and Oppo, tend to dominate. Either way, it makes for an interesting new OnePlus smartphone option, for those in a market where it becomes available.
