One of the many things that have helped make Game Of Thrones and A Song Of Ice And Fire so beloved in pop culture and so excellent from a qualitative standpoint is the collection of characters who get introduced across the eight seasons/seven books. There are many brilliant ones, but there is an argument to be had that the most popular is Jon Snow.
Jon is such an integral part of the show, particularly after the first couple of seasons. Throughout his time in it, he vast selection episodes that are crucial to his character, whether they be good or bad, and affected his life, arc, or person massively.
10 Season 2 Episode 6 "The Old Gods & The New"
Marriages in Game Of Thrones are often cold, with few being love-filled, and people so often lusting after someone else, as well as death continually looming over them, while non-marital romances with happy endings being infrequent.
In this episode, not only is Jon out on his first expedition as a ranger, but he meets Ygritte. He and Ygritte are one of the few romances in the show filled with genuine, mutual love, and this episode kicks that off with Jon's refusal to kill her.
9 Season 3 Episode 5 "Kissed By Fire"
Fast forward one season and nine episodes later, and their relationship is growing, and it builds to a massive moment for both, with love there following Jon joining the Wildings - despite some having significant doubts about the crow.
This episode sees Jon officially break his vows as a brother in black, as he chases Ygritte into a cave where the two make love, and Jon manages to impress, not to the level of Podrick, but certainly enough for the woman he loves.
8 Season 1 Episode 8 "The Pointy End"
There are many crucial episodes for Jon Snow in season one of the show. Episode one where we meet him (and he meets Ghost) and see his relationships with many people, and the start of his relationship with Tyrion, and subsequent episodes where he joins the Night's Watch, meets Sam, etc.
However, "The Pointy End" is one that is huge for Jon Snow's entire character throughout all eight seasons, as well as having major implications for the show. It is Jon's first encounter, and kill, of a Wight, and acts as a catalyst for Jon Snow's journey to finding out about the Army of the Dead and the Night King.
7 Season 5 Episode 2 "The House Of Black & White"
When Jon Snow joined the Night's Watch, it was far from what he expected, and much less of an ideal life as he had thought it to be for himself. Nonetheless, he made a home for himself there, surrounded by brothers who gravitated towards him
When Lord Commander Mormont got killed at the mutiny of Craster's Keep, a new Lord Commander was to get elected, which would be Jon, that coming in this episode. It highlighted the respect and leadership Jon commanded amongst the brothers who had got on with him, and it also helped kick off a series of events that led to Jon leaving the Night's Watch.
6 Season 7 Episode 3 "The Queen's Justice"
Earlier on, the romance of Ygritte and Jon got talked about, and that is, without doubt, one of the best, most organic, and most beloved relationships in the series. When Daenerys and Jon got together, it was far less popular.
Nevertheless, it happened and was not that bad in season seven. It is in this episode where they meet, two of the show's leading characters for over seven seasons. It sets up events to come between the pair, as well as the short-term tension of bending the knee vs. providing help to the North that comes over the next couple of episodes following this one.
5 Season 6 Episode 3 "Oathbreaker"
The finale of season five and the second episode of season six are undoubtedly two of the most important episodes for Jon Snow's character. Still, this episode is just as important as the first episode following his resurrection.
The episode sees him hang the traitors of the Night's Watch who murdered him, but far more important than that; it sees Jon leave the Night's Watch. He gave his life, and that was his watch over; he could then go on to help the North and rally against the dead.
4 Season 4 Episode 9 "The Watchers On The Wall"
Going back one more time to Jon's relationship with Ygritte, "The Watchers On The Wall" is where it comes to an end, with Ygritte's death at the bow of Olly at the Battle of Castle Black.
The episode is fantastic and has Jon, obviously, as a huge focus. Seeing tracking shots of him battling Wildlings and Thenns, him holding Ygritte's dying body, him pleading with Tormund to give it up, it is a phenomenal episode, and Jon is right in the middle of it all.
3 Season 6 Episode 9 "The Battle Of The Bastards"
From one battle to another, as utterly brilliant as "The Watchers On The Wall" is, the reigning king of Game Of Thrones battles appears to be still the Battle of the Bastards, which spends a lot of time with Jon.
Even though Sansa and the Knights of the Vale eventually win the battle, Jon leads the forces during most of it; the makers focus on Jon and his losing effort. The result of the fight allowed for Jon and the North to turn to the further North and the Night King's army, and give the North back to the Starks where it belongs.
2 Season 8 Episode 6 "The Iron Throne"
Season eight had a slew of issues. It should never have been as short as it was, the show could have gotten another three or four seasons, and D&D could not manage another four episodes to give it some sort of chance.
A significant way in which the season failed in the eyes of fans was betraying or wasting a lot of its characters, including Jon. Nevertheless, this episode sees Jon kill Daenerys and get sent away to take the black once again and go north of the wall with Ghost and his friends. It was not the outcome anybody seemed to want, especially in how it happened, but it is still a massive episode for Jon, setting up the rest of his life beyond the series.
1 Season 5 Episode 4 "Hardhome"
"Hardhome" is one of the most fantastic episodes of television ever, and one of Game Of Thrones' best, with an exhilarating battle, iconic moments, and genius craftsmanship.
The episode as it pertains to Jon pretty much kicks off the rest of his story; it gets him killed, allowing him to get resurrected to fight in the Battle of the Bastards and against the Army of the Dead. It started here when he convinced the Wildlings to come through the wall. Of course, it also has the Night King in the first proper look at his power as he raises all those who died in the battle. That moment when Jon Snow's Longclaw collides with the White Walker's blade is breathtaking.
