Indiana Jones 5: Writer David Koepp Confirms He Isn't Involved Anymore

Screenwriter David Koepp confirms he is no longer attached to Indiana Jones 5. The fifth Indiana Jones film has been in development for a very long time, with the initial announcement coming all the way back in 2016. At the time, original director Steve Spielberg was signed on to return alongside star Harrison Ford, and the release date was set for 2019. However, it was later pushed back to 2020, then to 2021. Earlier this year, Ford said filming on Indiana Jones 5 would begin in April, but the coronavirus pandemic halted those plans as it has halted almost every major film production. Because of that, Indiana Jones 5 has been delayed again to July 2022.

Having spent so much time in pre-production, Indiana Jones 5 has seen some major changes behind the scenes. Spielberg has since left the director's chair, and James Mangold (Logan) was recently confirmed to take his place. When it comes to the script, Koepp was initially tapped as the writer back in 2016, but he briefly ended up getting replaced by Jon Kasdan. Then, last September, Koepp returned to Indiana Jones 5He previously wrote the script for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

With Spielberg switching places with Mangold, some have wondered if Koepp is still involved with Indiana Jones 5's script. For a while, it was unclear, but Koepp has recently told Collider he is no longer attached to the project. As Koepp explained, "When James Mangold came in … he deserves a chance to take his shot at it. I’d done several versions with Steven. And when Steven left, it seemed like the right time to let Jim have his own take on it and have his own person or himself write it."

Between the new script changes and the ongoing pandemic, it sounds like Indiana Jones 5 once again has a long way to go before it hits the big screen. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was the last time audiences saw Indy in action, and while that film earned a lukewarm reception, there are still many who are eager to see Ford don the iconic hat once again. It isn't clear what the story will be about, though even if anything had previously been teased, it might be changing now under Mangold's direction. One thing is certain though: Indiana Jones 5 is definitely not a reboot.

Indiana Jones 5 is hardly the only movie to fall into development hell, though the many delays have made some wonder if the film will happen at all. However, the recent confirmation of Mangold as director indicates things are still in the works behind the scenes. Most likely, production will start up in 2021 once the pandemic has cleared up (hopefully). Should Indiana Jones 5 begin production by then, it shouldn't see any further delays. Of course, things can change in an instant, and odds are, people won't believe Indiana Jones 5 is really happening until they see Ford in costume once again.
