Why Ofglen 2 Had Her Tongue Cut Out In The Handmaid's Tale

Ofglen 2 is a recurring character in the earlier seasons of The Handmaid's Tale and the removal of her tongue is a brutal reveal in a series filled with shocking moments. The Handmaid's Tale is based on the 1985 book of the same name by Margaret Atwood, and depicts a not quite post-apocalyptic United States, but post-fairness, justice, and equality. After a Second American Civil War, a theocratic and totalitarian government is installed that, among the many human rights violations, subjects fertile women to a particularly oppressive style of slavery, referring to them as Handmaids.
