Ponyo isn't generally considered one of Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki's darker adventures, but bubbling just under the surface is one element that casts the film in a whole new light. The film charmed audiences with its story of the goldfish-like daughter of a goddess turned human through her love for a young boy. Like any good Ghibli film, there's plenty of emotional drama and dangerous magic, with everything culminating in a happy ending. But in the chaos that ensues with Ponyo's transformation, viewers--and the movie itself--easily overlook one sinister detail.
