In The Bear season 1, Marcus was sleeping at the restaurant, and dedicating much of his time to learning everything about desserts. The opening episode of The Bear season 2 reveals that Marcus has been juggling his studies and his work with caring for his sick mother, who is lying unconscious in a hospital bed. The overriding theme of The Bear season 2 is about struggling to maintain a work-life balance, and while it's a subtle undercurrent, Marcus and his mom are very much tied to the same thematic concerns.
