While James Gunn and Peter Safran have big plans for the future of the DC Cinematic Universe, one thing that remains unclear is what characters from Zack Snyder’s DCEU will be included in their plans. Jason Momoa's future as Aquaman is definitely left up in the air, but later this year we will see him back in action in Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom.
As for Momoa, he doesn’t seem to think there’s anything to worry about. He’s pretty confident that his Aquaman will be involved with the future of the DCU. During a recent interview with Total Film, the actor said:
"Peter [Safran]’s my producer [on Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom], and is a dear friend. I absolutely think Aquaman will be involved in the DCU. It’s on, bro – there’s no one bigger than Aquaman!
While you may laugh about his comment about no one being bigger than Aquaman, I will point out that the first Aquaman movie made $1.15 billion at the box office and it’s the highest-grossing DC film. So, in a way, no one is bigger than Aquaman. He went on to talk about the sequel, saying:
But, also, I hope people are excited to see the new one. It’s fun. I really enjoy doing comedy. There’s some really funny stuff with Patrick Wilson. I really adore him. We had a great time working together. It’s like we’re brothers. There’s a lot of cool stuff happening in this one."
Now, if the sequel makes an epic amount of money at the box office, you can bet that Warner Bros. and DC Studios are going to want to keep that franchise around. The problem is, test screenings for the sequel have not gone well.
The question is… what does this mean for Lobo!? I know a lot of fans would love to see Momoa play Lobo, which is a character he’s been talking about playing for years. But, no Lobo film has been announced. Momoa previously talked about a mystery “dream” project that will be made under the leadership of Gunn and Safran, and fans believe that could be Lobo. But, who knows, maybe his dream project is more Aquaman movies!
