Polymega Announces Free App is On Its Way to Play Your Favorite Retro Games on All Devices

Polymega is a physical emulator that lets you use your original games and controllers to play your favorite games in a modern era. I’ve heard remarkable things about the Polymega and if I could afford one, I would buy it. The base unit starts at $549 and allows you to play many CD-ROM based games like the original PlayStation, Sega Saturn, and more, but you can also get modules that let you use cartridge-based games like the NES and SNES among others. What’s more is that the modules have ports to connect original controllers and come with Polymega controllers that use the same port with a sleeker look. It’s a pretty slick system. It even has a light gun designed to work with your HDTV! This is all awesome. However, Polymega recently announced some exciting news: the Polymega App.

The Polymega App is a free downloadable app on the way that will let you access your games collection, game states, installs, and more via the Cloud. What’s more is that you can use any standard disc drive to start playing, installing, and managing your legacy games from your device. I know disc drives are becoming more rare as time goes on, but this is a small win for those of us who still like to have one. If you don’t have a disc drive though, don’t worry because Polymega has your back with the announced Polymega Remix. This is a piece of hardware that lets you connect your CDs and cartridges to your PC and other devices via USB to then use the Polymega App. This is pretty fantastic, especially considering that it will start retailign for only $149 at launch with more details on the way. That’s much more affordable!

Polymega has announced there will be a premium subscription available for the Polymega App called Polymega XL. Not much is known about the premium features (including pricing), but it sounds like one of those premium features is access to the Cloud for using your games on multiple devices. If you’ve purchased a Polymega Base Unit or Deluxe Bundle before December 31, 2022, you’ll be granted access to the closed beta for the Polymega App as well as exclusive access to Polymega XL during the beta, and a 1 year free upgrade to Polymega XL after the beta. If you’ve ordered anything else from Polymega, you’ll get access to the closed beta under the free tier.

Finally, Polymega announced a new, 2nd generation Universal Wireless Controller that uses a lower latency 2.4Ghz connection, improved battery life, and will be compatible with Android. This new controller will be included in all 2023 and future deliveries of Polymega devices.

This is all exciting, but there are some things to keep in mind. First, we don’t have solid release dates for anything. Polymega is hoping to launch the closed beta for the Polymega App in March, but that’s all we know. Second, Polymega is notorious for running into delays. I understand it might not be all their fault, but there are a lot of people upset that they still haven’t gotten their product. This is all to say that this sounds great, but temper your expectations.
