That Avatar Kyoshi Movie Was Never Going To Happen | Screen Rant

The universe of Avatar: The Last Airbender will be expanding through the release of a trilogy of animated movies, but none of them will center around Avatar Kyoshi. When the trilogy was originally announced, it was speculated that the first movie would be about Kyoshi. However, it's official that the first movie will be about Aang. Although this might be disappointing for some, centering the first movie around Aang is more fitting for the franchise’s return.

When reports of new Avatar: The Last Airbender animated content first surfaced, it was speculated that the movies would focus on Kyoshi, Zuko, and Korra, respectively. This was officially dismissed with a post on Nickelodeon Animation’s Twitter, where Korra’s voice actress Janet Varney announced that the first movie of the new Avatar: The Last Airbender spinoffs would be focused on “Avatar Aang and his friends” (via Twitter). While this could be potentially upsetting news for fans, focusing one of the upcoming movies around Kyoshi was always an unlikely choice.

Kyoshi has become a subject of interest through the release of two young adult novels that centered around her early journey as the Avatar and that have been met with enthusiasm regarding the potential of adapting them into an animated format. However, this notion has been disregarded by franchise creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. According to DiMartino, “I think the thing we’re not doing now...is, like, we’re not adapting the graphic novels into a [movie or] TV show, we’re not adapting the YA novels into a movie or TV show” (via iHeart). With no current intention from the creators to adapt Avatar’s literary works into an animated format, the richest Kyoshi Avatar storylines for a movie are diminished. While Kyoshi is a popular figure within the Avatar fandom, she might not be as appealing to a broad audience of new fans, so focusing an entire movie on her would be risky. As a result, having the first film released in the new Avatar Studios trilogy center on her was always unlikely.

The new Avatar movies not only signify the launch of Avatar Studios, but the first major animated releases for the franchise since The Legend of Korra ended in 2014. The most logical subject for the first film is the person who Avatar: The Last Airbender started with: Aang. As the franchise’s most recognizable character, a film focused on him would draw in a broader audience than one focused on a peripheral character like Kyoshi. It could be argued that there are other characters who deserve focus, but Aang’s story is far from finished. Between the end of Avatar: The Last Airbender and his death before The Legend of Korra, there is plenty of uncovered territory about Aang’s life that the movie could focus on. Centering the first of the new Avatar movies around Aang is a great jumping off point for Avatar Studios.

While it is disappointing that one of the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender movies will not be about Kyoshi, the creators’ decision not to adapt Avatar’s expanded universe novels made it unlikely from the beginning. To launch Avatar Studios and reintroduce the franchise to a new generation of fans, focusing on Aang for the first Avatar: The Last Airbender movie is a much more sound and logical choice, given his popularity and ample unexplored territory. The creators have left the door open for potential adaptations of Avatar’s literary works for the screen, so while it is possible there might be a focus on Kyoshi in the future, it will not be in one of Avatar Studio’s first three movies.
