New Star Wars Show Casts Battlefront 2 Star As Ahsoka's Mom

Janina Gavankar, who plays Iden Versio in the 2017 video game Star Wars: Battlefront II, has been cast as Ahsoka Tano’s mom in the upcoming animated Star Wars anthology series, Tales of the Jedi. Dave Filoni and George Lucas created Anakin Skywalker’s Togruta Padawan (voiced by Ashley Eckstein) for the animated feature Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008). Ahsoka would go on to play a major role in The Clone Wars series and Filoni’s spin-off, Rebels.

Following Rebels, Filoni began work with Jon Favreau on Disney+’s first live-action Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, which has gone to admirable lengths to connect the films and animated shows. Season 2 of the series introduced The Clone Wars and Rebels characters Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) and Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson), the latter of which was inspired by a viral fan-casting. Dawson’s older Ahsoka also appeared in The Book of Boba Fett and is set to headline her own Disney+ series in 2023. It appears the character’s animated tenure is far from over as Ahsoka’s story will be further fleshed out in Filoni’s new animated anthology.

During Star Wars Celebration 2022, Disney/Lucasfilm announced the long-rumored Tales of the Jedi, an animated anthology series. The series of shorts will chronicle the past adventures of Count Dooku and Ahsoka Tano, who will receive three episodes each. It was also revealed that Battlefront II’s Janina Gavankar voices the character’s mother in the series as the actress was brought on stage during the panel.

Attendees of the Star Wars Celebration were also treated to a 15-minute episode of Tales of the Jedi, “Life and Death,” which depicts Ahsoka's birth and early years with her family. The warm episode reportedly earned a standing ovation from the audience. Subsequent episodes are said to be darker and span a large portion of her life; images revealed at the panel showed Ahsoka as a youngling and training with Anakin. While it’s unclear whether Hayden Christensen—who stars in Ahsoka—or Matt Lanter will voice the latter, Eckstein will presumably return to the role of Ahsoka in Tales of the Jedi.

Outside of Ahsoka, Tales of the Jedi’s Dooku story will see Liam Neeson and his son voice Qui-Gon Jinn at different times in his life. Given Dooku and Ahsoka both share a disillusionment with the Jedi Order, the series will likely explore the dichotomy between their philosophical approaches. That said, Filoni clearly has no intention of abandoning the Force user he created anytime soon. He will reportedly direct episodes of the Ahsoka series, which will continue the character’s story from The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Rebels as she searches for Grand Admiral Thrawn and Ezra Bridger. Whether Ahsoka ties into her or her mother’s story in Tales of the Jedi remains to be seen when the six-episode series drops on Disney+ this Fall.
