Only One Star Wars Clone Ever Had the Potential To Become A Jedi

While Clone Troopers fought alongside the Jedi in the Star Wars prequels, one Clone Wars-era comic introduces a Clone Trooper who could have become a Jedi. The Clone Trooper nicknamed Glitch took his loyalty to the Jedi further than his brethren, believing that he too could use the Force, though he never exhibited any Force sensitivity. Glitch’s relentless devotion to his generals’ beliefs made him the subject of mockery among his fellow troopers, but his goal of becoming a Force user isn’t technically impossible.

All Republic Clone Troopers are grown from the template of the Mandalorian bounty hunter Jango Fett. While Fett is one of the galaxy’s greatest warriors, he did not possess Force sensitivity. Unlike his Legends continuity counterpart, the Jango Fett from Star Wars canon also never imparted his Mandalorian culture to his Clone Troopers either. However, some clones did considered themselves Mandalorians, such as Glitch’s squadmate Horns and the Republic’s Clone Pilots, who were trained by the Mandalorian Fenn Rau.

In Justin Aclin and Ben Bates’ graphic novel Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Defenders of the Lost Temple, Glitch and his squadmates accompany their Jedi leaders to Draay 2, where they run afoul of Pre Vizsla and a group of Death Watch warriors. While the clones best the Mandalorians in combat, Glitch briefly (and futilely) wields a Jedi lightsaber against Vizsla, who is armed with the Darksaber, but the Clone Trooper is MIA and presumed dead by the end of the skirmish. Glitch remains on Draay 2, and while he never shows any signs of Force potential in the graphic novel, his undying belief in the Force and the Force’s presence in all life means that, had Glitch been given proper Jedi training, he could theoretically use the Force.

Every being in Star Wars is connected to the Force in some way, but only a few have enough aptitude to become powerful Force users. Despite this, beings who open themselves to the Force and put in the time and discipline to learn how to use it can become Force-users. The Jedi librarian Jocasta Nu claims to have a weak connection to the Force, but she nevertheless became a Jedi Master. Glitch certainly has the belief and drive to learn about the Force, so it’s not impossible for him to use the Force in at least rudimentary ways with enough training.

The tragic irony of Glitch’s belief in the Force and the Jedi is that the secret true purpose of the Clone Trooper was to assassinate the Jedi when Order 66 was issued. Since this was achieved through a brainwashing implant, clones follow Order 66 regardless of their friendships with their Jedi leaders. Perhaps, if Glitch finally used the Force before the end of the Clone Wars, he’d detect his implant and remove it, freeing him from Imperial servitude and allowing him to become the only Clone Trooper in Star Wars to also be a Jedi.
