Sims 4 Mod Adds Nostalgic Way To Rent Blockbuster Movies

A new Sims 4 mod is a blast from the past, allowing Sims to rent movies from a Blockbuster-like service called FlicBuster. Modding has always been a big part of the game's community, with some mods adding even more content than the official Sims 4 expansion packs released by EA. The Sims 4 has sold over 36 million copies since its release in 2014, and mods are a great way for many of these long-time players of the series to spice up gameplay with new content.

Out for over seven years now, The Sims 4 has received a sizable amount of DLC in the form of Expansion Packs, Game Packs, Stuff Packs, and Kits. The smaller the DLC release, the more focused the subject tends to be - for example, Stuff Packs generally focus on a single style, room, or activity, with releases like Laundry Day Stuff and Movie Hangout Stuff. Players can also obtain a sizable amount of unique new content through the use of mods, many of which introduce entirely new elements of gameplay to The Sims 4, such as burglars or more detailed Sim personalities.

A new mod by creator Lot 51 (via SimsCommunity) aims to add a dose of nostalgia to The Sims 4 by making a Blockbuster-style service entitled Flicbuster available to Sims. To begin, Sims will require a FlicBuster membership which they can purchase for 35 Simoleons at a FlicBuster Express Box. From there, players can have their Sims rent movies online or at FlicBuster Express Boxes to be watched at home on the mod's DVD player. For an extra dose of realism, Sims will accrue late fees if they keep the rented movies over 4 days. Players can also choose for their Sims to pirate movies, downloading films online and burning DVDs themselves which they can sell for a profit. To have Sims sit down and watch the movies, players must own the Movie Hangout Stuff Pack, but all items included are compatible with the base game and can be used as decor.

Although the additions made to the game with this mod aren't huge, it adds several new interesting elements to Sim entertainment, as well as a large potential for player storytelling. Players can have their Sims pick out a movie together for a romantic date, or argue about movie choices. For players doing a decades challenge in their game, this mod would be perfect for the 90s and early 2000s eras, although sadly there is no VHS rental option. Even from a purely decorative standpoint, the addition of stacks of DVDs alongside the player itself is great for those who enjoy making in-game builds full of clutter.

Recently, the Sims 4 team has provided new, free elements of gameplay for fans to enjoy in an effort to keep the game fresh for long-time players. However, even with official updates and DLC releases from EA, mods will always be incredibly important to many players. Mods allow players to find the hyper-specific things they need for storytelling and design and let gamers explore new elements of gameplay never offered by official releases for the game. It's not surprising that over 7 years after the release of The Sims 4 many players have found themselves burnt out, and mods are often the perfect remedy to bring fans back to the game.
