Why On My Block Killed Two Fan Favorite Characters In Season 4

The On My Block season 4 finale killed two fan-favorite characters, Oscar Diaz (Julio Macias) and Ruby's Abuelita, Marisol (Peggy Blow), but why was it necessary that the beloved characters die at the end of the series? Before Oscar moves to Portland to start his dream job as a restauranteur, he’s shot by an unknown assailant and dies tragically in front of the home in Freeridge he’d been trying to escape from for years. After a prolonged battle with cancer, Abuelita passes away peacefully offscreen while the Core Four attend their senior prom. The On My Block season 4 deaths were shocking but necessary.

Throughout On My Block's four seasons, Oscar and Abuelita greatly impacted the four main characters. While Oscar was Cesar’s brother, he acted as the Core Four’s unofficial big brother who watched out for them even when he was known as “Spooky,” the leader of the Santos gang. Oscar helped Ruby overcome his depression in season 2 after Olivia’s death, saved the Core Four from being targeted by the rival gang the Prophet$ by framing them for the Freeridge Savings robbery, and comforted Monse after the death of her mother in season 3. Abuelita was a good friend and mentor, specifically to Jamal. She was the first person to encourage Jamal to search for the RollerWorld fortune, was the getaway driver on their adventures, and helped them “wash” the RollerWorld money. Given their influence, Oscar and Abuelita's deaths were necessary in On My Block season 4 for the Core Four’s own growth.

Oscar was killed because his death gave Cesar a reason to pursue a life outside of Freeridge. Oscar straightened out his life by leaving Santos, started his own family, and was about to move to Portland to fulfill his lifelong dream of becoming a chef at his own restaurant in On My Block season 4. Since Oscar died before he had the chance to escape Freeridge, Cesar decides to honor his brother's legacy by building the life Oscar deserved for himself. Cesar plans to achieve this goal by following his own dream: moving to Portland to be close to his niece, attending college, and becoming an architect. Despite the fact that the Santos' claim they are a family, Oscar’s death also made Cesar realize that Santos didn’t protect Oscar when he needed them, which convinces Cesar to leave the gang for good.

While Oscar’s death significantly influenced Cesar’s character growth, Abuelita’s death alternatively had an impact on all four of the main characters. When Cesar, Monse, Ruby, and Jamal weren’t speaking after the Core Four's breakup in On My Block season 3, Abuelita sent them a fake ransom letter in season 4 with the aim of bringing them back together. When the Core Four graduate from high school and are about to go their separate ways for college, Abuelita leaves them a treasure map, similar to Lil Ricky’s RollerWorld scavenger hunt, after her death. By giving them one last adventure that’ll likely lead them to discover the remaining RollerWorld money, Abuelita is ensuring that Jamal, Ruby, Monse, and Cesar will still remain friends despite the fact that they’re leaving Freeridge to pursue their own goals. With this in mind, Abuelita’s final speech to Jamal may have been insinuating that the Core Four’s purpose is each other, just as her purpose was a person.

Besides providing character growth for Cesar, Monse, Ruby, and Jamal, Oscar and Abuelita’s deaths in On My Block season 4 also brought the series full circle. Similar to Oscar's decision to stay in Freeridge to take care of Cesar when he was a child, Cesar is now making the decision to move to Portland to look after Oscar’s newborn daughter, upholding his brother’s legacy even further. Abuelita’s death also helped bookend the series by having On My Block begin and end with a party that shows the cast of the spinoff Freeridge spying on their party in the same way that the Core Four observed the high school party in the first episode of season 1.
