Peacemaker Fixes John Cena's Suicide Squad Dick Jokes Mistake

The Peacemaker trailer fixes a problem with some of Peacemaker’s jokes in The Suicide Squad by further developing the character and making it clear he is actually an idiot. The first full trailer for the show was released as part of DC FanDome 2021. It fleshes out the team that will support John Cena's Peacemaker and gives an idea of what the HBO Max TV show’s plot will focus on but also shows a more nuanced approach to Peacemaker as a character.

John Cena’s Peacemaker was introduced in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. The larger-than-life character was memorable for his betrayal of his team when they tried to make a moral choice that deviated from their mission and for his murder of Rick Flag. However, almost eclipsing these scenes were Peacemaker’s comedic moments as the character seemed intent on misinterpreting or derailing situations with his comments. When Amanda Waller tells them that their mission is to destroy all traces of “Project Starfish” he asks whether it might be relevant that “starfish is a slang term for a butthole.” Similarly, when DCEU assassin Bloodsport tries to insult him by telling him to “eat a bag of dicks” he responds that he would happily eat a beach full for liberty.

In The Suicide Squad, it's easy to read these lines as Peacemaker mocking the people he is working with, putting on a deliberately obnoxious front in an effort to get a rise out of others. It is easy to imagine that an entire TV series focused entirely on a character who works to be intentionally irritating and quick to make dick jokes could quickly get tiresome. However, the Peacemaker trailer fixes The Suicide Squad’s problem when it shows that he is really just stupid. In the trailer, he explains to the rest of his team the concept of a “butt baby”, a nonsense story that he was clearly told as a child but clearly still sincerely believes in. This suggests that when he responds to Waller and Bloodsport he is also being truly sincere about his questions and convictions, and not simply attempting to irritate them.

This could be a great sign for the Peacemaker TV series. By making Peacemaker into someone who is genuinely gullible and ignorant, it allows for the series to produce better character growth and redemption than if he were genuinely trying to be an annoying person. The trailer shows that Peacemaker will lean into this by having Peacemaker question what he’s been doing and having Leota Adebayo see through the ignorance-fueled confidence of his exterior to the lost person inside.

Additionally, Peacemaker is setting up a true origin story for Peacemaker and why Christopher Smith is the way that he is. The Peacemaker trailer introduces Robert Patrick as Auggie Smith, Peacemaker’s racist, close-minded father. Even the brief scenes in the trailer go a long way to explaining where Peacemaker got his ideas about the world and how he might have grown up to be so ignorant and oblivious to the way things truly are. It’s a small change from The Suicide Squad, but by making it clear that Peacemaker isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed from the beginning, Peacemaker can make the character sympathetic, interesting, and provide ample room for growth.
