Many mechanics for Pokémon Legends: Arceus were confirmed during the August Pokémon Presents, showcasing the many ways players will be able to explore the upcoming open-world Pokémon game. Pokémon Legends: Arceus is set in the Hisui region, known as the Sinnoh region in Diamond and Pearl, and will explore the origins of well-known Pokémon staples like the Pokédex, Poké Balls, and the origins of the Pokémon Trainer journey. A particularly exciting mechanic revealed during the Pokémon Presents was the confirmation of the crafting system to transform forageable items into new tools for catching Pokémon.
Crafting systems have become a common staple of open-world games. The mechanic creates a greater sense of immersion during exploration, as players must find items hidden in environments to create required items for gameplay. While older Nintendo franchises like Pokémon and The Legend of Zelda don't contain a proper crafting system in earlier titles, the recent Zelda game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild introduced the mechanic with widespread success. With many similarities between Pokémon Legends: Arecus and Breath of the Wild, it isn't surprising crafting has been included.
The gameplay teased during the Pokémon Presents for Pokémon Legends: Arceus gives a glimpse of how large the region of Hisui will be. Much like the modern map of Sinnoh, there will be different biomes scattered across the historic version of the region. The grassy planes, mountainous slopes, and frozen landscapes will likely contain forageable items unique to each area. If Pokåmon Legends: Arceus continues to follow Breath of the Wild's crafting and foraging mechanics, rare items will be found in locations difficult to reach, and require careful planning to access. This will make rare forageable items and the tools they craft more rewarding to obtain and use.
According to Pokémon Legend: Arceus' official information, Poké Balls will be one of the craftable items available to make either at Base camps or in Jubilife Village. The basic Poké Ball will be crafted using an Apricorn and a Tumblestone, with the ability to craft multiple Poké Balls at one time if the required ingredients are present. Currently, it isn't known which of the many different Poké Balls from the Pokémon series will be included in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. However, with the confirmation of Apricorns as forageable items, it is possible any of the balls crafted using them in previous games could be potential options.
While nothing has been confirmed currently, there is also the possibility that players may be able to cook while at their Base camps. Teased gameplay of the Base camp shows a fire with a small grill over the flames. While this may simply be for decoration, the use of a cooking mechanic similar to curry in Sword and Shield would offer additional ways to use foraged items, as well as a fun minigame to engage in. It is even possible players will be able to cook Poffins, the Pokémon food items introduced Diamond and Pearl. Poffins could be used to lure in Pokémon Legends: Arceus' many wild Pokémon, increasing the likelihood of a successful catch.
