8 Things We Learned From The New Eternals Trailer | ScreenRant

Ever since Kevin Feige announced the film at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con, Eternals has been one of Phase 4's biggest mysteries. Fans wondered how Jack Kirby's team of ageless warriors would fit into the larger MCU considering they are some of the most powerful beings in the Marvel canon.

The final trailer for Eternals just arrived, answering some lingering questions about the movie's plot. Fans got to see the team in action, with many of the Eternals displaying their impressive abilities. Furthermore, the trailer also provided the first glimpse at the movie's antagonists, the Deviants, and revealed some fascinating details about the MCU's most cryptic project yet.

9 There Will Be An Event Known As The Emergence

The trailer opens with a shot of Salma Hayek's Ajak riding a horse. She then talks to Richard Madden's Ikaris on the porch of his isolated home. She shows admiration for humanity's efforts to bring back everyone who disappeared after the Snap before mentioning something called "the Emergence."

Ajak states that the return of half the population "provided the necessary energy for the Emergence to begin." The event will start in seven days and judging by Ikaris' expression and Ajak's somber tone, the Emergence is a potentially catastrophic event that could be just as destructive as the Snap.

8 The Eternals Are No Longer Working As A Team

Ikaris says to an unknown figure that they need to find the other Eternals. In a voiceover, Sersi then says that she hasn't seen some of them "for centuries." The team is seemingly disbanded and is no longer working together.

Fans already suspected that each of the Eternals leads separate lives at the start of the movie. Kumal Najiani's Kingo, for example, is a Bollywood star, while Barry Keoghan's Druig seems to live in an isolated village in the middle of a forest. However, the trailer confirms that the Eternals' separation took place a long time ago and hints at a possible conflict within the team. Whether this past rift is explored remains to be seen but the film strongly indicates that to survive the Emergence, they must band together once again.

7 The Emergence Brings The Eternals Together

Ikaris and Sersi then presumably go and track down the other members of the team. A scene at the end of the trailer shows them with Bryan Tyree Henry's Phastos. In another shot, Ikaris, Sersi, Phastos, Kingo, and Lia McHugh's Sprite meet with Angelina Jolie's Thena, who greets them coldly.

In traditional Marvel fashion, the Eternals will reunite to face their ancient nemesis, the Deviants. There are several shots throughout the trailer showing their battles with these alien conquerors, who resemble a deadlier version of the Chitari from the first Avengers film. These scenes seem to be a mix of events occurring in the past and present, so it's still unclear which members fight the Deviants in the present.

6 Dane Whitman Knows About Sersi's Nature

The trailer gives fans the first significant glance at Kit Harington's Dane Whitman. A recent EW cover story revealed that Whitman is in a relationship with Sersi, and the love triangle between them and Ikaris will play a significant role in the movie. Moreover, Sersi trusts Dane enough to reveal her true nature to him. He questions her about the Eternals' lack of participation in the world's conflicts, and she replies they were forbidden to intervene.

Comic book fans know Dane Whitman as the Black Knight, an Avenger who wields a mystical sword. It's unclear if Harington's Whitman will sport his familiar superhero costume and Ebony Blade in the movie or if he'll only be in his civilian form. The trailer only hints at the pair's potential romance, which was also a major storyline in the comics.

5 Celestials Will Appear In The Movie

Celestials play a crucial role in every one of the Eternals' comic book storylines. The Celestials created the Eternals as the result of experiments performed on proto-humans. In some versions, the Celestials meant the Eternals to be Earth's defenders.

There are two Celestials that appear in the trailer. The first, Arishem the Judge, gets a proper close-up, revealing Jack Kirby's influence on the movie's colorful visuals. The second, a green Celestial who appears near the trailer's end, is unidentified but could be any of the other dozens of cosmic beings that have appeared since their debut in 1976. No matter who it is, Eternals will provide the first real glimpse into the Celestials and expand the cosmic corner of the MCU more than any other Marvel movie has done before.

4 The Deviants Can Shapeshift

The Eternals' main enemies are called Deviants. They are mutations in the Celestials experiments, explaining their rivalry with the seemingly perfect Eternals. Deviants are humanoid-looking in the comics, although some can resemble monstrous beings with oversized heads.

In the movie, the Deviants seemingly retain their humanoid forms but also take the forms of beasts. The first one to appear in the trailer resembles a dinosaur. Kingo, Thena, and Don Lee's Gilgamesh later fight other similar-looking Deviants. Lastly, Ikaris fires his eye beams against a flying Deviant that resembles a Pegasus.

3 Kro And Thena Have A Previous Relationship

Comic book fans know about Thena's forbidden relationship with the Deviant warlord Kro. They met in Babylon and grew close over the years. Eventually, the two make love during the Vietnam War, and Thena gives birth to twins, Donald and Deborah.

The trailer shows a scene in which Kro wraps his tentacles around Thena. Her eyes look grey and lifeless as if she is under a trance. It's unclear if the movie will explore the characters' complicated dynamic, but at the very least, the trailer confirms they had a previous relationship.

2 The Eternals' Powers Look Similar

Some Eternals are more powerful than others, but every member has a different set of powers. Ikaris can shoot laser beams from his eyes and fly. Kingo shoots energy projectiles from his hands. Sersi manipulates inanimate matter, and Thena creates weapons out of cosmic energy.

With so much variety in their abilities, fans wondered how it would translate into live-action. The trailer provided many shots of the Eternals using their powers and confirmed all their abilities are of a similar golden color. It's a visually dazzling choice that immediately stands out against the film's earthy cinematography, and it also makes them look more like a united team than any of the MCU's current line-ups.

1 The Eternals' Spaceship Is Buried In The Desert

Once the Eternals are back together, they travel to the desert to retrieve their spaceship. The trailer shows them summoning it from under the sand, where it presumably stayed for centuries.

Phastos, Druig, Sprite, Ikaris, Sersi, and Kingo are part of the desert expedition, and Phastos seems to be the one who locates the ship. It makes sense, considering he's a gifted inventor and probably behind the technology that concealed the ship for so long. It's unclear where the other Eternals are at the time but the presence of the spaceship promises to reveal more about the Eternals' origins and how they landed on Earth.
