Here's how Pablo died and was soon reborn again in Ash Vs Evil Dead season 2. The original Evil Dead was a no-budget production stapled together by director Sam Raimi and star Bruce Campbell, but its shocking violence, inventive visuals and uniqueness made it a cult favorite. Raimi and Campbell essentially remade it with 1987 sequel Evil Dead 2, which was a mix of horror and comedy. The sequel is one of the great horror comedies of all time, and arguably Sam Raimi's best movie period.
The trilogy was completed with Army of Darkness, with Universal attempting to make a more mainstream version of Evil Dead. While this resulted in bigger setpieces and a PG-13 rating, the sequel wasn't a success on its initial release. That said, it's also earned a rabid cult following, and has been re-released countless times on DVD and Blu-ray. While Campbell would reprise Ash in some video game spinoffs and the original was remade in 2013, it appeared Ash returning for Evil Dead 4 would never happen. That's until Ash Vs Evil Dead arrived in 2015.
This is a Starz-produced TV series that brought all of the gore of the movies to the small screen, and Ash Vs Evil Dead might feature the grossest scene of the whole franchise. Campbell returned as Ash and was joined by two new sidekicks: Dana DeLorenzo's Kelly Maxwell and Ray Santiago's Pablo Simon Bolivar. The latter is somewhat in awe of Ash when the series begins - though that fades slightly as they fight demons together. Pablo became the living embodiment of the Necronomicon after the book itself chose him in season 1, and this would lead to his eventual death in season 2.
In Ash Vs Evil Dead season 2, the spells from the book began to manifest on Pablo's skin, and he became a threat to the season's villain Baal. The latter tried to trick Ash into killing Pablo, but in a rare case of Ash outsmarting someone, he actually played along just to get Pablo and Baal together. In Ash Vs Evil Dead's episode "Ashy Slashy" Pablo jams his thumbs in Baal's eyes to banish the demon to Hell, with the latter wildly swinging his arms. It appears to work and Baal is sent back - only for Pablo to split in half, as one of Baal's claws sliced him during the struggle.
A heartbroken Ash then has a vision of Pablo coming back to life and telling him to travel back in time before he even encountered the book during the original Evil Dead. This would spare Ash a lifetime of pain and bring Pablo back. The season 2 finale saw the crew travel back, only for Ash to learn Baal had tricked them again - he hid in Pablo's body and wasn't banished. Ash challenges Baal to a brawl; if he wins, Pablo is resurrected and the demon goes back to Hell. If Ash loses, the world will basically end.
Against all odds in Ash Vs Evil Dead's finale, Ash actually does succeed and after the famous cabin burns down, a living Pablo crawls from the ashes. Ash Vs Evil Dead season 2 ended on a positive note for its heroes, and the show would return for a third and final season in 2018. Pablo will soon reunite with the rest of the show's characters for the upcoming Evil Dead: The Game.
