WandaVision Theory: Agatha Worked For The Time-Keepers

Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) could have targeted Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) in WandaVision on behalf of Loki’s Time-Keepers. The MCU already established one reason for the 17th century witch to have an interest in her, but there could be more to the story. It could relate in some way to the details that were provided in Loki about nexus events.

In WandaVision, Scarlet Witch discovered that an evil, power-hungry sorceress had invaded her fake reality in the guise of a nosy neighbor. After the deception was dropped, Agatha’s talk with Wanda dropped a number of big reveals, among them being the truth about how Wanda really got her powers and the MCU’s take on Agatha Harkness’ origin story. As for why she came to Westview, it was stated that she “sensed” Westview’s existence. Apparently, she came to investigate because she couldn’t understand how Wanda crafted such a place with her magic. Upon figuring out that Wanda was the Scarlet Witch prophecies by the Darkhold, Agatha schemed to take steal Wanda’s magical potential for herself.

Later on, Marvel might reveal that what Agatha was up to in WandaVision is tied to the Time-Keepers and the Time Variance Authority (TVA) in Loki. Like Agatha, the Time-Keepers are seemingly powerful beings who have managed to remain hidden from the characters of the MCU until Phase 4. They haven’t been seen yet, but if what the TVA says about them is true, then they’re a trio of reclusive aliens who stopped a multiversal war and are now dedicated to protecting what everyone calls the Sacred Timeline. One way they accomplish this goal is through the TVA, who polices the timestream for them. But the TVA may not be the only people who have taken orders from them in the MCU’s history. Here’s why Agatha may have a link to these mystery characters.

The nexus concept from Marvel Comics was carried over to the MCU in Marvel’s Disney+ shows. Following a tease in one of WandaVision’s fake commercials, Marvel explained this term properly in Loki. In the series premiere, Miss Minutes said that if a person steps off their path in the timeline, a “nexus event” is created. If this nexus event is allowed to go unchecked, one possible consequence is a second multiversal war. It was for this reason the Time-Keepers set up the TVA. In the comics, the Time-Keepers and the TVA pay close attention to “nexus beings” because they possess the capability to change the timestream on their own. Based on what’s known about the TVA, it seems that the same would be true for their MCU counterparts. As long as nexus beings exists, there will always be threats to the Sacred Timeline that the TVA will have to keep an eye on.

At least one nexus event happened between Loki (Tom Hiddleston) making off with the Tesseract in Avengers: Endgame and the emergence of Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino). In fact, the entire conflict that played out with Scarlet Witch in WandaVision was a nexus event in itself. It was created with the birth of Westview, which was showed through flashbacks in episode 8. Nearly broken by her grief over Vision’s death and the other tragedies in her life, Wanda subconsciously channeled her Chaos Magic energy to will the town into existence and altering the fabric of reality itself. Long before an official definition for a nexus event in the MCU was ever laid out, Marvel actually hinted at Wanda’s actions being one in episode 7. In retrospect, it’s clear now that WandaVision’s “Nexus” drug commercial was a sign that what Wanda had really done was launch a nexus event. When comparing what she did to what Loki has said about them, this does make sense. In the words of the TVA, nexus events occur when a person steps off their path, and this is exactly what Wanda did. In defiance of the fate that had been given to her, Wanda “made” the reality she wanted for herself.

Nexus events in WandaVision raises one obvious question: Where were the TVA when this was happening? Looking at the catastrophes that Wanda could have set off, she should have been on their radar, but it appears that the TVA took no steps to stand in her way. Since the TVA not knowing about the incident in Westview is a highly unlikely scenario, they must have had a good reason for not sending any of their agents to investigate. It’s possible that what motivated them to do nothing was the knowledge they had of Wanda’s powers. Loki’s fights with Hunter B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku) proved that the TVA’s time weapons make them formidable adversaries in combat, but its hard to imagine them prevailing in a full-on battle with Scarlet Witch, whose power could render them all harmless in a way that’s not unlike how she handled Hayward’s SWORD agents. If fighting Wanda would have resulted in the TVA’s forces being decimated, it’s understandable that they would sit this one out.

Of course, the Time-Keepers and TVA couldn’t have just accepted that Wanda was unstoppable. It may be that if they determined that the TVA lacked the raw power necessary for contending with Scarlet Witch, the Time-Keepers sought another solution to the Westview problem. If so, this solution could have been Agatha Harkness. They may have contacted her through a TVA agent, telepathic communication, or perhaps some other means. Since she, more so than any team of TVA agents, had at least enough magical powers to be a threat to Wanda, she feels like the kind of character they could have tasked with this mission. Going to Westview to stop Wanda could have been her original purpose before her curiosity and ambition drove her to pursue her own ends.

If this is true, Agatha’s connection to them could be acknowledged in one of Loki’s remaining episodes. Agatha Harkness being a weapon of the Time-Keepers would be an interesting development because it would open the door for more characters like her to work with them in the future. When up against super-powered variants and nexus beings, it would be a good idea for them to have allies who are comparable to them in power – as long as they don’t get out of hand like Agatha in WandaVision.
