Respawn's Job Listings Might Signal New IP Is A Single-Player RPG

A recent job listing suggests that Respawn Entertainment’s newest game might be a single-player RPG. Founded by former Infinity Ward architects Jason West and Vince Zampella in 2010, Respawn has since made a name for itself thanks to hit titles like Titanfall 2, Apex Legends, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, even being bought out by EA in 2017.

Late last year, Respawn put out a job listing for a brand new IP, with a major talking point being that this game would allow players to “adventure forever” thanks to new technologies that the team would develop. Since then, details as to what this mystery project would be have been relatively scarce, with most discussions surrounding Respawn being centered around its continued support for Apex Legends or its planned sequels for 2019’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

However, another job listing for Respawn was uncovered by Dexerto earlier today, one that could shed some more light on the developer’s latest project. Among the positions Respawn is hiring for in this new opening is a Lead Combat Designer, preferably one with an eye toward “control mechanics, enemy design, AI behaviors, combat/weapons, class design, skills/progression, story, and boss encounters." While boss battles are nothing new for Respawn's previous games, the parts about skills and progression suggest that this new title will be an RPG of some kind. Additionally, there's an opening for a Senior Systems Designer, which Respawn hopes will “develop gameplay systems with a focus on longer-term loops and player motivation,” as well as “oversee the global balance and difficulty curves of the game, supporting diverse player skill levels and play styles.

While most of Respawn's catalog consists of multiplayer-focused titles like Titanfall and Apex Legends, the developer’s recent work on Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order proved that it can handle a strong single-player narrative and RPG-like character progression. In addition, the company has earned a great deal of goodwill from players and industry insiders alike for their commitment to ensuring the well-being of their employees by vowing to not crunch them to get a game or DLC component out faster - something that studios like Cyberpunk 2077’s CD Projekt Red and The Last Of Us 2’s Naughty Dog have come under fire for in the past year or so.

There still isn’t a whole lot to know about with Respawn’s new project, but the idea of a never-ending single-player RPG with the level of polish shown in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is an intriguing prospect. While it’s still too early to tell, perhaps Respawn might be ready to share some more details at the upcoming EA Play livestream on July 22.
