Netflix released new images from the fifth and final season of Money Heist, also known as La Casa del Papel, hinting at a violent showdown in the show's last episodes. The series, which started as a limited two-part show on Spanish cable TV, has become one of Netflix's most popular international shows. Season 5 of Money Heist will serve as the end for the Professor (Álvaro Morte) and his loyal clan of rag-tag criminals as they attempt to complete their second and most ambitious heist yet.
Money Heist is more than your typical crime drama — it blurs the lines between who classifies as the good guys and the bad guys. The gang of criminals who go by the names of major cities started as strangers but quickly became a family, particularly after the successful heist of the Royal Mint of Spain in the first two seasons. Silen Oliveira/Tokyo (Úrsula Corberó) serves as the main character, joined by Aníbal/Río (Miguel Herrán), Daniel/Denver (Jaime Lorente), Mónica/Stockholm (Esther Acebo), Mirko/Helsinki (Darko Perić) and Arturo (Enrique Arce). Season 4 ended with a cliffhanger as the group rescued police inspector turned criminal Raquel/Lisbon (Itziar Ituno) from jail. And Netflix is preparing for a two-part final season, airing September 3 and December 3 of this year, which will show whether or not they will succeed in robbing the Bank of Spain of all its gold.
Netflix revealed during Day 2 of its Geeked Week stream (15:30ish in the video) three new photos that give fans a glimpse at what to expect, including who might be the key rival during season 5. One photo shows Spanish military guards ready to open fire on the Bank of Spain. Series newcomer José Manuel Seda plays the lead soldier in the second image below. His character is still a mystery, but if he's outside with the military, there's a good chance he's the crew's new antagonist.
The other photos show Río posing with an assault rifle, ready to seek revenge on everyone who has wronged him. Additionally, a third still reveals three bank robbers behind a bunker defending themselves with a bazooka. The photos serve as a reminder to fans that the stakes are high and not everyone will make it out alive, even if the Professor's plan is successful. And remember that this time around, their identities are no longer a mystery to the public as the criminals have become celebrities in their own right throughout Spain. A hasty escape to a deserted island with all of the money in the world is not exactly an option.
Throughout the first four seasons, Money Heist has shown its capability to captivate viewers with high-intensity plot points and make them feel a deep connection to some genuinely dark criminal masterminds. And mystery and unanswered questions is the M.O. of the show. Netflix has a huge responsibility to give fans a satisfying final season while still keeping the air of mystery that makes the show so captivating. And based on the first trailer, it looks like Season 5 of Money Heist is truly looking to finish what it started back in 2017.
