The Goblet of Fire marks a turning point in the Harry Potter franchise - one where Voldemort goes from being a minor threat (his ghostly past, his face on Quirrell's head) to being fully returned, and ready to wreak havoc on the wizarding world. It's also one where the light, childish fantasy of the earlier films clearly turns to some thing darker, and the magic grows up to match.
And in the previous films, the most wholesome magical moments are those that showcase new magical spells and objects, and new corners of the wizarding world. These also tend to happen more earlier on in the film, as the later scenes are often using darker magic (such as bringing Voldemort back from the dead) or are more dramatic and heavy (like the death of Cedric).
10 The Portkey
The first big magical moment happens early on, and introduces fans to another mode of magical transport - the Portkey. The first instance of a Portkey in the book is used to take the younger Weasleys (and Arthur) to the World Cup, and it's the same scene that introduces fans to the Diggorys. As usual, the franchise brings up truly inventive new items, and the scene itself does a fantastic job of bringing the description of the actual travel to life.
9 The Quidditch World Cup
There are so many magical moments in this, but they can all be considered as one huge and magical event. The expansion of Quidditch to a global sport is magical in and of itself, as well as seeing the wizarding community out in force. However, the best moments have to be the actual match itself, and the moments when the mascots burst onto the screen. The film goes all out to make these huge scenes, and succeeds, and leprechauns and veela captivate the audience.
8 The Arrival Of Beauxbatons & Durmstrang
In the books, this scene is significantly more magical, as Durmstrang arrive on a ship in the Black Lake, and Beauxbatons descends from the sky in a giant carriage, but in the films this is still a magical moment. Both schools simply enter the great hall in the movies, but they do so with pomp and ceremony, and the awe and wonder is clearly felt. This is also the first time that fans are introduced to the concept of other wizarding schools, which is magical in and of itself.
7 The Lighting Of The Goblet Of Fire
Clearly, this was always going to be a big moment, as it's part of the title and probably the most important magical item in the film! Still, it's an impressive moment as the Goblet is revealed, and the blue flame springs into life.
In addition, moments when students try and cross the age line are a nice moment of levity for the film. This is the kind of scene where the magic is straightforward, dramatic, and beautiful.
6 Draco The Ferret
Moody may become a hated character by the end of the movie, as it is revealed who he really is, but for this scene - fans love him. Draco is being his usual odious self, and Moody responds by turning him into a ferret and bouncing him up and down! The magic itself is obviously impressive, but it's the satisfaction of seeing Malfoy put so firmly in his place that is the real appeal of this scene.
5 The First Task
The tasks of the Triwizard Tournament get increasingly more difficult and dangerous, but the first is pretty frightening as well - as Harry has to take on a dragon! This is definitely the most impressive magical creature that has shown up in the franchise thus far, and the magic comes in the tension of watching Harry try to outfly it, the terrifying beauty of it, and the celebrations afterward (not to mention Ron forgiving Harry and the two becoming friends again).
4 The Yule Ball
A lot of the most magical moments in this film come with danger, or mystery, but the Yule Ball is one that is purely wholesome and whimsical, and shows Hogwarts at its best. The ball is held over Christmas, for the students to celebrate with the other schools, and everything from the decor to the dress robes is stunning.
And of course, there's a particularly magical moment for Hermione fans, as she comes down the stairs in a stunning outfit, looking happy with herself and just thrilled to be dressed up, which is incredibly heartwarming.
3 The Second Task
Unsurprisingly, the second task is as magical as the first, in a different way. It's the first time that fans really get an idea of what's going on with the Black Lake, and certainly the first time that merpeople are introduced to the franchise. In addition, the charms that the contestants use are a fascinating look at inventive magic, and the entire task is beautiful to watch. The final magical cherry on top, though, is Harry being the hero, and making sure that everyone gets out safely.
2 The Pensieve
The other major piece of magical equipment (so to speak) that appears in this film is the Pensieve, which will come into play several times in the rest of the franchise. This first time, however, just involves Harry discovering it in Dumbledore's office, and dipping into a memory. In itself, the Pensieve is an incredible magical invention, and his connection to Dumbledore - and the hints at things to come in that relationship - make it even more so.
1 Priori Incantatem
The final task, and the final scenes, of The Goblet of Fire are more dark and serious than magical, but Priori Incantatem is a moment of light in all this darkness. In the graveyard with Voldemort, their wands experience that first connection, and Harry sees the 'ghosts' of Cedric and his parents (among others) join him, helping him, and keeping him safe. It's a beautiful moment, as Harry gets closer to his parents than ever, and one of relief, as he is able to escape a situation that seemed utterly impossible... even if it is just the start of the long battle to come.
