Warning! Spoilers for Captain Marvel #29 by Marvel Comics below.
In her quest to prevent a dark, dystopian reality from coming to fruition, Captain Marvel just used her powers in an incredibly creative way. In the latest issue of her ongoing series, Carol Danvers went deep below the sea to retrieve a magical artifact that would help her learn spellcasting. However, when she gets stuck in a mystical trap, Captain Marvel breaks free by riding a volcano's powerful blast.
In one of Marvel's most unlikely team-ups, Captain Marvel has recruited the Enchantress to teach her magic so she can ensure a reality where the Avengers and numerous heroes died doesn't happen. Carol tried reaching out to pretty much every magic-user on Earth to assist her in stopping Ove, the son of Namor and the Enchantress who made his way to the present timeline but has been routinely rejected as the sorcerers don't want to take away her biggest weakness. In a last-ditch effort to stop Ove, Captain Marvel asked Enchantress for help, while not revealing she's trying to stop her future son.
Captain Marvel #29 by Kelly Thompson, Jacopo Camagni, Espen Grundetjern, and VC's Clayton Cowles, shows Carol and the Enchantress head underwater in the Pacific Ocean to obtain a powerful artifact called the Heart of the Serpent, a glowing red pearl capable of helping the hero to learn magic. The pair find the pearl, but it's guarded by a magical barrier Enchantress can't go through, as well as giant serpents. Captain Marvel goes through the barrier dome and takes out the giant beasts. But, when she tries to phase through again, she can't. After trying to channel energy to break the dome, Carol falls down in frustration. It's there she immediately feels warmth in the ground and uses her powers to open up the vent and use the spewing magma to break through the barrier.
The comic ends with Captain Marvel traveling through an eruption of magma, as she uses her energy absorption and manipulation powers to get out of the seemingly impossible situation.
Captain Marvel is one of the most powerful heroes in the Marvel Universe, so to see her come up with a last-minute solution to escape the barrier when all hope seemed lost isn't surprising. But, seeing Carol Danvers ride a giant wave of fire and magma is without a doubt one of the coolest ways the hero has ever used her powers. Now that she's freed from the magical dome, can she stop Ove before it's too late? Captain Marvel #29 is in comic book stores now.
