Space Jam 2 Is Hinting At Daffy Duck Being The Tune Squad's Coach

Marketing for Space Jam: A New Legacy gives the impression that Daffy Duck will be coaching the Looney Tunes for their upcoming basketball match. If so, Daffy may not be joining Bugs Bunny and LeBron James on the court in the new movie.

In the original Space Jam, both Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck were members of the Tune Squad, a team of Looney Tunes characters assembled to play against the Monstars. In the long-awaited sequel, the Tune Squad will be reuniting to help LeBron James save his son. To accomplish this goal, they’ll have to defeat an entirely new group of villains, known as the Goon Squad. According to Bugs Bunny in the trailer, taking them down will require a “dream team” consisting of Looney Tunes icons such as Sylvester the Cat, Tweety Bird, Foghorn Leghorn, Wile E. Coyote, Speedy Gonzales, and several more. Even Granny will be getting in on the action.

One notable Tune who may be there for the game but not on the court is Daffy Duck. In the Space Jam 2 trailer, Daffy was shown garbed in a suit and tie, while the rest of the Tunes were wearing basketball uniforms. Daffy was included in several shots, but he wasn’t shown participating in any of the plays, which further indicates that he won’t be one of the players. Instead, it looks like he’s the coach. This idea is reinforced by Space Jam 2 merchandise, such as a Funko Pop labeled “Daffy Duck as Coach”.

To some, his look in the trailer could suggest that he’s the referee (a role that belonged to Marvin the Martian in the 1996 movie). But when the members of Bugs Bunny's team lay their hands on top of each other at 2:03 in the trailer, Daffy’s hand can be easily spotted, which makes it abundantly clear that he is indeed a part of the Tune Squad, and not someone who’s supposed to be a neutral party.

Daffy having this surprising position would give the members of the Tune Squad something they didn’t have in Space Jam. When they were playing against the Monstars, the Tunes had to rely a great deal on Michael Jordan, who was both their star player and the de-facto coach who called the shots. There was no official coach before, but it would seem that things will be different this time around, as it seems that LeBron James may not be the only one instructing the Tunes in Space Jam: A New Legacy. The only problem is Daffy feels like he could very well be the worst possible choice for this job. His wackiness, bad judgment calls, lack of intelligence, and confrontational nature could lead to disaster – but that could just be what will make it fun. What the original Space Jam showed audiences was that the zany, unpredictable antics of the Looney Tunes can be the key to victory.
