How Long Could Anakin Survive Without His Darth Vader Suit?

Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) is synonymous with the Darth Vader suit in Star Wars. Since the moment he was placed in the suit, Anakin was never seen outside of it. The movie franchise clearly established that the suit is vital to his survival, but just how long could he live without it?

Anakin's Darth Vader suit was the culmination of his journey to the dark side in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the SithAfter Obi-Wan learns of the horrible acts that Anakin commits, he confronts his former Padawan. The two engage in a lightsaber battle that ends with Obi-Wan severing Anakin's legs and left arm. Once Palpatine, Aka Darth Sidious, found the barely alive Anakin, he brought him to Coruscant in order to have the suit built that would become his life support system.

While the Vader armored suit was used as an intimidation tactic in the original series, the prequel trilogy establishes it as a necessary device to protect Anakin's charred and fragile body. Throughout his years in the armor, Vader found ways to spend stretches of time outside of the suit. But he could never stay out of the suit for too long, as it became too painful and hard to function. His failed attempts to become less dependent on that suit only reinforced Anakin's tragic life.

As Wookieepedia stated, the design of Darth Vader's suit followed the ancient Sith tradition of adorning oneself in heavy armor while incorporating Sith alchemy to supplement his much-diminished strength and vitality. As his injuries were so severe, Anakin initially completely relied on it. But as time went on, he found small ways to grow less reliant on the armor. Vader would try to wholly function without it, but it proved to be nearly impossible. However, he did add several pressurized meditation champers built on his ship so he could remove his mask and suit for longer periods of time. Ultimately, specific circumstances such as those were the only way he could comfortably survive more than a few moments without his suit.

The Star Wars prequel trilogy introduced Anakin as a tragic character. The first installments in the series saw him as an optimistic young man full of promise, hoping to make a better life for himself and his mom. He even fell in love with Queen Padmé (Natalie Portman). But the love for the women in his life led to his downfall, as the fear of losing them is what allowed Anakin to be so easily lured to the Dark Side. Becoming a Sith lord is what landed him in the Darth Vader suit. Simply put, loving too fiercely led to him living a life of solitude confined to the Darth Vader suit in the original Star Wars trilogy — and that is the ultimate tragedy.
