Harry Potter: The 10 Best Characters Introduced After The First Movie

The first film in the Harry Potter franchise, The Philosopher's Stone, kicked off a huge, culturally significant phenomenon in cinema, introducing a whole generation to the beloved franchise. The movie not only introduced the world as a whole to the screen but the majority of the main characters - Harry, Ron, and Hermione, of course, but also family members, teachers, and enemies.

However, over the course of the seven movies that followed, audiences were introduced to a plethora of amazing new characters who had great stories themselves and furthered the arcs of the central characters. There were plenty of new Defense Against The Dark Arts professors, of course, but Death Eaters, House Elves, and Ministry officials also joined the cast long after the introductory movie.

10 Alastor Moody

Alastor 'Mad Eye' Moody debuted in The Goblet Of Fire which was probably the best outing of the character, perhaps a negative thing due to how he was technically not in it! He was actually the evil Barty Crouch Jr., using polyjuice potion.

Nevertheless, Crouch was playing the role of Moody to such a high-quality degree that even Dumbledore was fooled, meaning audiences were looking at a very true-to-form version of Moody. Throw in his appearances in the movies after, as a part of the Order of the Phoenix, and it's clear why fans love this great, rough around the edges, grizzled veteran wizard.

9 Cedric Diggory

Before Robert Pattinson was one of the most talented and entertaining actors working today, and before he filled the role of Edward Cullen, he was Hogwarts sweetheart and popular Hufflepuff Cedric Diggory (also introduced in Goblet of Fire).

Arguably his best scene in the film is when his dead body is returned to Hogwarts, or even his death itself, but that does not mean Pattinson is not pretty great in the role. Cedric, like just about every Harry Potter movie character, is not as fleshed out as in the books, and therefore may not have the likability or impact of his book counterpart, but Pattinson still brings life and charm to the character who proved himself to be important in the story of Harry.

8 Gilderoy Lockhart

Speaking of charm, that is the M.O of Gilderoy Lockhart, played by veteran Shakesperian actor Kenneth Branagh; the character debuted in The Chamber Of Secrets and was one of the most vital characters of his sole movie.

He had some funny moments, was intensely unlikeable when he was supposed to be, and Branagh just fit the role exceptionally, hitting all the notes the character had to hit to be a good addition to the world and be a memorable part of the early era of Potter. The movie may play way more into the dorkier aspect of the character, but that does not take away too much from his quality.

7 Prof. Horace Slughorn

Making his on-screen debut in The Half-Blood Prince, Horace Slughorn was a potions expert and a crucial piece of the Voldemort puzzle, at least in Dumbledore's investigation into the Dark Lord and his power.

Played by Jim Broadbent, Slughorn has so much great stuff in the film, from his fish story to his giving up the memory to Harry, Broadbent's performance is arguably an underrated one. As a character with both dark and light in him, a non-evil member of Slytherin's house, Slughorn is a fascinating, if not a mad, character whom the veteran Broadbent brings a lot to.

6 Dolores Umbridge

Again, every character on this list has so many details and a lot of brilliance left out of them from the books and does not perfectly transition from page to screen, but while Imelda Staunton may not be toad-like, she gave fans a great Umbridge.

So intensely and irretrievably unlikable, Umbridge is still a great character, a perfect antagonistic foil for Harry and the teachers/students of Hogwarts. Her abhorrent nature makes her a love-to-hate villain, ups the stakes of the prank from Fred and George, and arguably helps the quality of The Order Of The Phoenix overall.

5 Bellatrix Lestrange

One of the best and most iconic villains of the Harry Potter series, Bellatrix LeStrange, was brilliant. Helena Bonham Carter brought her unique look to the character and personified her insanity brilliantly.

Lestrange makes her debut as an escaped prisoner from Azkaban in The Order Of The Phoenix (in the movies) and ends up having a colossal impact on that movie and the lives of Harry and the order in the future. She is cruel, prejudiced, evil, adoring of Voldemort, and one of the series' best straight-up bad guys who do not fall in any morally grey area.

4 Remus Lupin

Remus Lupin's wife, Tonks, took a huge hit in the movies; with the character not getting nearly as much personality as she did in the books, she still deserves a special mention for being a popular and good character with so much more to her than we see.

Lupin, though, had some fantastic stuff in the movies. He makes his debut in arguably the best of the Potter series, The Prisoner Of Azkaban, and is like a father figure to Harry, teaching him how to defend himself, helping him when he needed it, giving him advice, and talking to Harry about his parents; he is pretty fantastic in the film. His role may not have been as big in the movies after, but he was still a great character and one of the hardest-hitting deaths of the Battle of Hogwart's cinematic counterpart.

3 Luna Lovegood

Quirky, eccentric, intriguing, with a unique view of the world, Luna Lovegood is the best Hogwarts student character introduced after the first movie, played pretty perfectly by Evanna Lynch.

Debuting in The Order Of The Phoenix as a key member of Dumbledore's Army and a great friend to Harry, Luna has a pure heart, is true to herself, and is an honest presence who humanizes Harry in a world that puts him on a pedestal. Her intelligence is not shown as obviously in the films, but she is as sharp as she is dreamy and a great inclusion into the Hogwarts student body.

2 Dobby

Everyone's favorite house-elf, Dobby, is undoubtedly one of the most beloved and iconic Harry Potter characters of all time, making his debut in The Chamber Of Secrets and being a great ally to Harry.

While his actions in his debut film were questionable at points, he always had a good heart and was trying to do good. His being freed by Harry was a phenomenal moment, and his eventual death was one of the most painful for fans to watch, being both haunting and beautiful.

1 Sirius Black

Speaking of painful deaths in Harry Potter, the one that undoubtedly affected Harry the most, and was no easy watch for fans either, was that of Sirius Black, a really terrific character and one of the most popular amongst fans.

His death was lacking in the aftermath, and the Mauraders, in general, have a lot of issues in terms of their page-to-screen adaptations. But ignoring all those details, the role Sirius plays in Harry's story, and how good he is across his three films in the series, as well as his appearance as a spirit, means he is one of the best and most crucial characters introduced post philosophers Stone.
