The Mandalorian Video Game Should Be Star Wars: Bounty Hunter 2

The Mandalorian has been a consistent high point of recent Star Wars media, so it's almost surprising there isn't already a video game based on the show's X-Files-like monster of the week formula. Rumors suggest a The Mandalorian video game is in production, but fans already got a virtual trip inside the iconic Mando armor way back in 2002's Star Wars: Bounty Hunter.

Now considered non-canon, Bounty Hunter took place before the events of Episode II: Attack of the Clones and fleshed out the backstory of Jango Fett, galaxy-renowned bounty hunter. Largely a third-person shooter, the game explained how Jango became embroiled in the Sith machinations that created the clone trooper army in his image. If the rumors about the Mandalorian game are true, Disney would be better off funding a Bounty Hunter 2 than a game about The Mandalorian's Din Djarin.

The Mandalorian hasn't concluded yet, but unless the game bridges the story between its second and third seasons, there isn't a lot of room in its existing story to fit the plot of a game. Instead of trying to capitalize on The Mandalorian's success directly, a Mando video game should focus on a different character from the series: Boba Fett. The iconic bounty hunter from the original Star Wars trilogy has a connection to both The Mandalorian and Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, making him the perfect protagonist for a Mandalorian-focused video game.

There are decades of existing and yet-unknown stories about Boba Fett between Attack of the Clones and his appearance in The Mandalorian that could easily be adapted into a video game. A story of Boba's rise to prominence after the death of his father in Attack of the Clones would make a compelling narrative and allow for engaging bounty-hunting gameplay - similar to what could have been in the canceled Star Wars 1313 game. Boba was chosen as part of a select few in Darth Vader's lineup of hunters in The Empire Strikes Back; coming into the purview of the powerful Vader was likely no small feat, so letting players experience that era of Boba's life could be extremely fun.

There are many more narrative options for making a successor to Star Wars: Bounty Hunter. Making Mando the main character in a game based on The Mandalorian really only leaves one option: a prequel story. This wouldn't necessarily be a bad idea, but it means Din would be without Grogu, and their relationship is one of the show's biggest draws for many fans. While perhaps playing into original trilogy nostalgia, a Boba Fett story would make for a stronger video game.
