Quibi Shows Will Get New Life As Roku Originals | Screen Rant

Roku will be rebranding shows from the now-extinct Quibi as Roku Originals. Roku was founded in 2012 and produces digital media hardware that allows access to multiple streaming platforms. There have been 10 generations of Roku hardware as of 2021, as well as the Roku-branded Smart TV released in 2014. In 2017, Roku launched its own streaming channel called the Roku Channel, which includes licensed programming as well as original Roku content. Quibi was a short-form media streaming service that launched in April 2020. After missing the mark on subscription numbers, the service was shut down in December 2020 and sold to Roku, Inc.

The Roku Original programming, including over 75 titles acquired from Quibi, will be available on the Roku Channel. These titles will include pre-released Quibi programming like Anna Kendrick's Dummy and Kevin Hart's Die Hart, as well as unreleased titles originally scheduled to premiere on Quibi before its shutdown.More information regarding original titles and release dates will be detailed at Roku's presentation at NewFronts in early May. Says Roku's VP of Engagement Growth Marketing, Sweta Patel, via Deadline:

We’re thrilled to introduce this award-winning and diverse portfolio of entertainment under the Roku Originals brand. It’s relevant, fun and thought-provoking TV that has something for everyone from the best talent in Hollywood.

This incredible surge in Roku's original content will not only rectify Quibi's star-studded series lineup, but will also allow Roku to actively compete with larger streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. While the Roku Channel already boasts licensed content from Warner Bros., Lionsgate, and Sony Pictures, among others, it has lacked original content with a sustainable viewership. Because the acquired Quibi shows already feature big Hollywood names like Idris Elba, Anna Kendrick, and Liam Hemsworth (to name a few), the Roku Channel is more than likely to see a spike in overall viewership, as well as an increase in their media hardware sales. With exciting new titles under its belt, Roku is poised to succeed in 2021.
