Uncharted: 10 Unpopular Opinions (According To Reddit)

Though the franchise isn’t over, as fans are finally getting a movie adaptation, Nathan Drake’s story is all wrapped up in the video-game series. The character’s story, along with everyone else’s, was wrapped up perfectly, and the journey to get there has been so exciting, whether it’s uncovering the lost city of Shambhala or fulfilling the quest of T.E. Lawrence.

Uncharted is the most state-of-the-art video-game series ever made, and Naughty Dog became legends thanks to the franchise, but not every gamer completely agrees. Though there are no fatal flaws in the games whatsoever, besides the fact that Drake is a clear knockoff of Indiana Jones, there are some intricacies that fans and haters alike have some hot takes on.

10 Tomb Raider Is Better Than Uncharted

With Lara Croft once being the PlayStation mascot, she has since been succeeded by Nathan Drake, but some gamers still side with the tomb raider. Specifically mentioning Rise of the Tomb Raider, the second game in the rebooted trilogy, the user argues that it’s far superior to any and every Uncharted game.

Though Metacritic can shoot that opinion down with a quick search, Rise of the Tomb Raider is actually great, and it’s ironic that it was clearly very influenced by the Uncharted series more than anything.

9 The Desert Level In Drake’s Deception Is Unnecessary

Though Uncharted is such a stunningly cinematic series, not everyone can appreciate it. In the final act of the third game in the series, Drake’s Deception, there’s a long walk over some sand dunes. Drake is all out of water and he becomes delusional, seeing mirages of wells and even whole towns.

It’s such a cinematic chapter and it’s Naughty dog flexing their storytelling muscles in every way, but the Redditor thought it shouldn’t have even existed. The user is on their own though, as it’s one of the best locations in the series.

8 Among Thieves Ruins Drake’s Character

The second game in the series, Among Thieves, might be one of the fans’ favorites, but it isn’t without its shortcomings in its storytelling according to this Redditor. Arguing that the first game finds Drake more down-on-his-luck and acting in self-defense than excitedly going guns-blazing, they posit that Uncharted 2 sees Drake as vengeful and villainous, and since gamers last saw him, he has become completely immoral.

But while the reasoning behind all of the murder will be hard to adapt for the movie, there’s so much murder in every action game, and the user unfairly holds Uncharted in a different light.

7 Sam Should Have Died In A Thief’s End

Despite the fourth game’s sinister-sounding title, A Thief’s End wraps up everyone’s story arc perfectly, and it’s such a happy ending for everyone, but one user wasn’t happy with that.

They wanted Sam, Drake’s brother, to get killed due to his obsession with the treasure and constantly putting his life at risk to attain it. Quoting Nadine who says, "those who obsess over the treasure end up dying for it," the user argues that it would have been a nice parallel if Sam was murdered, but most fans think the ending was as perfect as it could have possibly been.

6 Drake’s Deception Is Better Than Among Thieves

Of the original trilogy, Among Thieves is generally considered as the best thanks to taking place all over the globe, the giant set-pieces, and the finale in Shambhala. The increase in quality between the first game and Among Thieves was huge, which is why the second game is so celebrated.

Drake’s Deception is arguably just as good, but very few think it’s better. One Redditor brings up a good point that the melee is much better, the flashback scenes to when Drake and Sully first met are incredible, and there’s more variation in the locations. But ultimately, the train set-piece in Among Thieves alone tips the second game over the edge, and the action piece is why the movie will be a success.

5 The Climbing In Uncharted 4 Is Fun

The campaign in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is almost twice the length of every other Uncharted game as it’s close to 25 hours in length. And with that long of a game, it’s going to be padded out with a few filler levels.

As state of the art as the game is, the one common criticism amongst fans is that there’s way too much climbing. However, one user enjoyed the climbing, and to their credit, Uncharted 4 does have the new pick-axe feature, which is loads of fun, if a little long in the tooth.

4 The First Uncharted Is Better Than People Say

When it comes to the Uncharted series as a body of work, the first one stands out like a sore thumb in terms of quality when compared to its successors. Though the game looks fantastic and the story is immaculately told, the gameplay is shocking in parts, especially when it comes to using weapons and the gunfights.

But this Redditor was so sucked into Drake’s Fortune’s characters and all of the witty dialogue that they were willing to overlook the game’s many shortcomings.

3 Talbot Is A Great Villain

One of the best things about the entire series is the characters, as there are barely any people that Drake encounters that don’t have their own interesting backstory and characteristics. But fans stand united on the one character that is the least interesting. Well, the fans stand mostly united, as this hot take suggests that Talbot is actually a great villain.

Talbot for some reason has magical powers, which are never once explained, and he’s a complete wet blanket in terms of personality. But the user doesn’t care about the plot holes, and they think it adds to the mystery of the character.

2 Uncharted 4 Is The Worst In The Series

While this user admits that the finale to Drake’s story was a complete tear-jerker, they were still bitterly disappointed by A Thief’s End, even though it’s generally considered a work of art by many. Complaining about how slow the pacing is, how few set pieces there are, and how different the tone is to how it was marketed, the Redditor believes it doesn’t hold a candle to the original three games.

Though the game might be long and there are huge periods of exploration, the whole series has always been about exploring the environments, and Uncharted 4 revels in that, as the areas are so vast and dense. And if players just blast through it without exploring, then they’ll miss a lot of exciting stuff.

1 The Whole Series Is Awful

Given that the original games of the series were released as a remastered trilogy a couple of years ago, it gave younger gamers a chance to play the games for the first time if they hadn’t already done so.

However, instead of falling in love with the characters and environments like everyone else, one Redditor complained about how dumb the so-called puzzles were, the clunky combat, and the mundane gunfights. And while those complaints are valid for the first game, it’s almost as if they didn’t even play the following two games, as they both vastly improve on every aspect of the game.
