The hit sitcom Modern Family looks at the various dysfunctional family units that make up the one big happy clan at the center of the story. The show really succeeds when it is exploring the difference between these family members. And while the ensemble lets all the characters shine, it is evident that not everyone is equal.
In terms of the power dynamics among these characters, there are some huge degrees of difference. In respect to this show, power factors in wealth, social standing, and professional positions. Who's at the top of the heap?
10 Luke
Clearly, the younger characters on the show will be the least powerful, but even among the kids, Luke is obviously dead last. When the show began, he was a spacey young boy who didn't have a lot going on inside his head. As he grew older, he got taller but not much else changed.
Luke's intelligence is a big reason he is the least powerful. He has never had much ambition and fails to really make much of himself for most of the series. Of course, that never really seems to bother him.
9 Manny
Manny is the same age as Luke, but the two young men could not be more different. Manny prides himself on his intellect and his cultured sensibilities, which put him ahead of Luke in the rankings. However, those personality traits also make him an outsider.
Throughout the series, Manny is seen as an unpopular kid at school and one who frequently strikes out with the girls, despite his best efforts. When he gets older, some of those qualities become more appreciated by others and his social life grows. But his pursuit of a filmmaking career despite his lack of skills doesn't help his standing.
8 Alex
It's safe to say that out of the entire extended family, Alex is the smartest by a considerable amount. Unfortunately for her, intelligence doesn't always equal respect in this family. Alex is another youngster who has a hard time fitting in and her social standing is quite low.
She has a lot of social awkwardness that can sometimes get in the way of her intelligence and she is also ignored by her family a lot. But Alex is also someone whom her family depends on in many situations to steer them in the right direction.
7 Haley
Haley is the oldest of the kids so it's not surprising that she holds the most power out of all of them. She is not the brightest young lady, but she is outgoing and very popular, which allows her to get just about anything she wants.
Once she leaves the world of high school behind, Haley has trouble making it as an adult. She bounces around in different jobs and educational pursuits without finding a path that works for her. However, she eventually finds a job and starts a family of her own which makes her seem like one of the adults.
6 Phil
Phil Dunphy is one of the most likable characters on the show. However, a lot of the things that make him a funny character to watch also make him the least powerful adult. His youthful nature is entertaining, but it doesn't gain him much respect.
His children often see him as a bit of a doofus and the other adults see him more like one of the kids who is not trusted with much responsibility. While Phil is a good family man, his professional life is also marred by failures and poor decisions.
5 Mitchell
Quite the opposite of Phil, Mitchell is a very serious member of the family who is career-driven and obsessed with having things in an orderly manner. Ironically, this makes him about as respected as Phil as everyone sees him as a bit of a stick in the mud.
Among the adults, Mitchell is the butt of many jokes, especially from his father. He also takes things very personally and is easily offended, which doesn't help him get much respect. But he can also be the most level-headed adult in the family who keeps things grounded.
4 Cam
Cam is always the life of the party. Sometimes that can be a good thing and sometimes it can be a bad thing. He is someone who is very easy to like and is very personable, which makes him very powerful in the social sphere.
While Cam's big energy can rub some people the wrong way, he's also pretty good at winning people over as well. Cam was a stay-at-home father for a period in the show and struggled with being taken seriously, but his ultimate profession as a high school football coach is a good fit and one that gains him respect.
3 Gloria
To many, Gloria appears to be a trophy wife, but she is much more than that. Yes, she is a beautiful woman and that alone earns her considerable power. Without being demanding, people do things for Gloria just to get noticed by her.
She sometimes struggles to find her own projects and endeavors, but she has a determined nature that allows her to achieve a lot. Her less-privileged upbringing also makes her the toughest person in the family and the one who handles the sticky situations.
2 Claire
Claire has always been the biggest boss in the family. She needs to be in control of situations because she doesn't trust anyone else to do it right. She is certainly the authority figure in her own house but she is also not afraid to boss around the other adults.
When Claire decides to go back to work, she has some trouble getting respect from her employees, but she eventually proves herself to be the tough and professional leader she knew she could be. A lot of her power might come from intimidating people, but she seems fine with that.
1 Jay
Jay is the patriarch of the whole family and he takes that role very seriously. He expects everyone to listen to him and can be very pushy in ensuring things are done his way. Despite being annoyed with his grumpy persona, the family usually goes along with it.
While he is not the most social guy, he is very rich and is usually the one taking the whole family out to fancy restaurants and expensive vacations. As a business owner, he was a tough and no-nonsense boss who built a successful company on his own.
