In a new preview from DC Comics, Nightwing and the Next Batman are teaming up in DC's Future State. While it's no doubt going to be very fun to see the Dynamic Duo back in action, there will be some twists to the classic team-up, as these are very different characters in a very different Gotham City. Gotham itself has been darkened quite a bit by the organization known as the Magistrate, who've turned the city into an oppressive police state outlawing all masks and the activities of vigilantes. However, Nightwing is leading a resistance movement, and the new preview for Future State: Nightwing #2 reveals that he'll be forming an alliance with Tim Fox, the Next Batman.
In the first issue of Future State: Nightwing from writer Andrew Constant and artist Nicola Scott, Nightwing is absolutely done with the Magistrate's regime. In the time that Bruce Wayne has been gone (believed to have been murdered by the Magistrate's "peacekeepers"), Nightwing has become Gotham's Public Enemy No. 1 as the leader of the vigilantes who remain. As such, Dick Grayson has become darker along with the city, becoming more serious and determined to end the Magistrate's control. Now, it looks as though Grayson has reached his breaking point, as he let himself be tracked by the Magistrate at the end of the first issue, seeking an all-out war to end things once and for all.
However, the arrival of the Next Batman was not something Grayson had been counting on, as the two had yet to cross paths. While Nightwing initially believed that there would only ever be one Batman (Bruce Wayne), the preview pages for Future State: Nightwing #2 reveal that Grayson seems more inclined to support Fox taking on the mantle, as there can now still be a Batman to protect the city should Grayson fail in his upcoming battle with the Magistrate. However, it doesn't look like the Next Batman is okay with letting Dick fight the peacekeepers and soldiers on his own. The truly cool thing about the return of the Dynamic Duo is that this time in DC's future, Nightwing is the one with the most experience, while the new Batman is the one looking to learn and assist, effectively switching the roles of the original pairing. Furthermore, while it seems as though Grayson and Fox will survive their first battle with the Magistrate, Nightwing is going to call on his network of allies and fellow vigilantes to lend a hand, leading to an all-out war for Gotham City. All things considered, this is definitely not going to be an issue Nightwing and Batman fans will want to miss when it comes to comic book store shelves soon from DC Comics.
