Star Trek: Discovery's new 32nd century uniforms are certainly a throwback - but is it a welcome one? In the final chapter of Star Trek: Discovery season 2, Michael Burnham led the crew 900 years into the future to avoid catastrophe in the present. There, she eventually discovered a hidden and greatly depleted Federation, but the two sides struggled to see eye-to-eye initially, with Admiral Vance keen to protect the Discovery's spore drive from the villainous Emerald Chain and their chief mischief-maker, Osyraa. By the end of Star Trek: Discovery season 3, Osyraa is dead, causing a chain reaction that seemingly renders the entire Emerald Chain inert. Vance finally accepts Discovery as a fully-fledged Starfleet vessel, appoints Michael Burnham captain, and sends the ship to begin the restoration of the Federation.
Among the many changes implemented during the final 10 minutes of Star Trek: Discovery season 3, Burnham and her crew get a makeover to match their 32nd century colleagues. Arriving from the past, the Discovery gang were still wearing their outdated blue jumpsuits, while their contemporaries were all dressed in various shades of pale gray. But as Discovery heads out to deliver dilithium for the first time, the cast's old Starfleet uniforms have been thrown out and replaced with fresh tunics to match Vance's mob. Colored stripes down the right side indicate each character's role, and extra detail can be found upon the collar and shoulders.
The most immediate comparison is to the Starfleet uniforms seen in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. When Kirk and the original Enterprise cast finally made it to the big screen in 1979, the crew were dressed in pale, dreary pastels. The one-color design meant that, at a glance, Spock, McCoy and the rest were effectively wearing pajamas with big black belt buckles. Viewers who were accustomed to the iconic, colorful Starfleet uniforms of yore recoiled in horror, and even the cast hated the new look. When Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan arrived 3 years later, the design had been replaced by classy red tunics with white and gold adornments. A marked improvement, most would agree.
With Star Trek: Discovery introducing predominantly gray uniforms with matching tops and bottoms, comparisons to The Motion Picture were inevitable, and it's curious that Star Trek would choose this route in 2021, given how unwelcome something similar was in 1979 - a time when literally anything was fair game in the fashion world. The Discovery's new clothes look cumbersome, bulky, overly-formal, and once again, have that unfortunate look of space pajamas with rubber rain boots. It's certainly hard to imagine Burnham going Bruce Willis on Osyraa in this stiff getup.
Many Star Trek: Discovery viewers will at least be glad to see the back of the show's original blue uniforms. The costumes were described as a drab far cry from the classic design, and were more akin to Enterprise than The Original Series. Star Trek: Discovery season 4 offered the perfect opportunity to ditch the blue and introduce a modern interpretation of what Pike's Enterprise crew were wearing in season 2. Instead, the updated outfits are arguably worse. The new costumes work fine for the background characters of 32nd century Starfleet, but aren't punchy enough for the main cast, whereas the blue design at least blended nicely with the bridge decor of Discovery. The blueish gray trouser and top combo still fails to draw the eye, even 40 years later.
